Zendaya and Robert Pattinson‘s new A24 movie The Drama arrived in theaters on April 3, 2026. The film, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario), follows a couple whose wedding plans go off the rails after a dark secret comes out. While early reviews praise the lead performances, the movie’s central twist has created significant discussion online and criticism from some advocacy groups.
The film premiered on March 17, 2026 at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles. A24 distributed the movie worldwide. It runs for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
What Is ‘The Drama’ About?
The Drama centers on Emma Harwood and Charlie Thompson, an engaged couple living in Boston. Emma works as a bookstore clerk, while Charlie serves as the director of the Cambridge Art Museum. They seem like the perfect pair until a party game changes everything.
During a night of drinking with their best friends, the group plays “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?” Emma’s answer shocks everyone in the room. She reveals that as a teenager, she planned a school shooting. She never went through with it, but the confession forces Charlie to question everything he knows about the woman he loves.
The rest of the movie follows how this revelation affects their relationship and upcoming wedding. Charlie struggles with whether he can still marry someone with such a disturbing past, even though Emma has clearly changed.
Robert Pattinson and Zendaya Lead the Cast
Robert Pattinson plays Charlie Thompson, a British art historian with a Ph.D. from Tufts University. He comes across as polite but shy, with a fragile ego that shows when life gets hard. Pattinson’s performance has received strong praise from critics.
Zendaya plays Emma Harwood, a bright and sarcastic bookstore clerk originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Emma lost hearing in one ear after a shooting practice accident in the woods as a teen. She is far more complex than she first appears, and the movie explores how her past continues to affect her present.

Supporting Cast Adds Depth
Alana Haim (of the band HAIM) plays Rachel, Emma’s maid of honor and close friend. Rachel is harsh and direct. Her sharp tone makes people feel uneasy. She starts the confession game that leads to Emma’s big reveal.
Mamoudou Athie plays Mike, Charlie’s best man and Rachel’s husband. He takes part in the confession game and reacts with shock to Emma’s secret.
Hailey Gates appears as Misha, a woman involved in a misunderstanding with Charlie that leads to a physical fight.
Zoe Winters (Succession) plays Frances, the couple’s wedding photographer. The scene with the photographer provides some of the movie’s darker comedic moments.
Other supporting cast members include:
- Sydney Lemmon as Pauline
- Hannah Gross as Alice
- Anna Baryshnikov as Sam
- Michael Abbott Jr. as Blake
- Jordyn Curet as Young Emma
What Critics Are Saying
The Drama currently holds an 81 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 128 reviews . Critics mostly agree that Zendaya and Pattinson deliver strong performances, even if the movie’s central twist divides opinions.
Pete Hammond of Deadline called the film “a darkly funny, yet explosively honest movie” and described Pattinson’s performance as a “career-best” .
Empire Magazine gave the movie four stars, writing that it is “hilarious in that cruel, keen way that Borgli has proved to be a specialist” .
The Guardian praised the film, saying it “delivers on its promise” and “offers us a provocation, a jeu d’esprit of outrage” .
Not all reviews were positive. The Hollywood Reporter called the film “a handsomely made, sharply performed letdown,” saying the twist “grows more weightless as the story unfolds” . Time magazine critic Stephanie Zacharek wrote that “it’s hard to have any idea what The Drama is trying to say or do, beyond tease its audience with its lack of specificity” .
The Australian newspaper gave the film one star, calling it a “repulsive mess” .
Controversy Around the Film’s Marketing
The Drama has faced criticism from gun control advocacy groups over how A24 marketed the movie. The studio promoted the film with wedding-themed social media posts and even set up a pop-up wedding chapel in Las Vegas. Critics say this marketing did not prepare audiences for the movie’s serious subject matter.
March for Our Lives, a gun control group founded after the Parkland school shooting, posted a statement on Instagram criticizing the campaign. “The way this film has been marketed is deeply misaligned with the reality it engages,” the group wrote. “We expect better from A24 and the artists behind it” .
Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was killed in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, spoke with TMZ about the film. He called using school shootings as a plot device “awful” and argued that Zendaya’s casting “humanizes” and “normalizes” prospective shooters .
Alyson Michalka and AJ Michalka, who survived a mass shooting outside one of their concerts in 2022, called the marketing “sick” in Instagram comments .
Some viewers defended the film online, arguing that art should make people uncomfortable and start difficult conversations. “It brings awareness to the societal context we are raising our children in,” one commenter wrote .
