A new clip from Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest has arrived, and it does something DC animation has failed to do for years: it lets Nightwing fight like the trained, capable hero he is in the comics. The nearly two-minute sequence, released on November 4, 2026, shows Dick Grayson in a brutal, extended hand-to-hand battle against Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael — and for a large section of the Batman fanbase, it reads as a direct correction of a long-running on-screen habit of sidelining or undermining the original Robin.

The clip lands just weeks before the film’s December 15, 2026 release on digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. It also confirms the voice cast, the R rating, and the exact chapter of the 1990s Knightfall saga the movie adapts.

What Happens in the New Nightwing Clip

The clip opens with Nightwing jumping onto a motorcycle and chasing an ambulance through Gotham. He manages to cling to the moving vehicle, pulls himself into the driver’s side, and finds a masked figure behind the wheel. A vicious fight follows. Nightwing is briefly overpowered, but he recovers, tears off the mask, and reveals Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael as the driver.

The fight is not a quick cameo. Nightwing takes hits, gives hits, and stays in the sequence until the unmasking. For a character who has often been written as the Bat-family member who arrives late, gets knocked down early, or exists only to react to Bruce Wayne’s decisions, the clip gives him a clear, physical role in the story’s action.

Mike Prater voices Nightwing in the film, while Pablo Schreiber voices Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael. The clip was released exclusively through IGN and quickly circulated across Batman fan communities.

The “Mistake” Fans Say DC Animation Kept Making

The phrase “long-running DC animation mistake” is not an official studio statement. It reflects a complaint that has built up across multiple DC animated projects over the years: Nightwing is frequently used as a punching bag, a comic relief target, or a character whose competence is reduced so that another hero or villain can look stronger .

The most cited example is the Harley Quinn animated series. In Season 3, Nightwing was written as a “brooding, emo” version of Dick Grayson — a portrayal that the show’s own writer-producer, Patrick Schumacker, admitted he was nervous about. Schumacker told ScreenRant that the character was “kind of antithetical to the Dick Grayson of the comics right now,” and that he feared comic readers would reject the shift.

An older controversy comes from the animated film Batman and Harley Quinn (2017), which included a scene where a tied-up Nightwing is subjected to suggestive behavior from Harley Quinn. The scene drew criticism for treating the character as a prop for a joke rather than as a capable hero. Across various DC animated movies, fans have also pointed to moments where Nightwing is defeated quickly by villains he would realistically match or outthink in the comics.

The new Knightquest clip does not erase those earlier portrayals, but it does give Nightwing a sustained action sequence in a film that is otherwise focused on Bruce Wayne’s replacement. Supervising producer Rick Morales said bringing Nightwing into the sequel “in a real way” was one of the things he was most excited about.

“And also, I think one of the things that I’m most excited for is to bring Nightwing into it in a real way.” — Rick Morales, supervising producer

Morales also pointed to the relationship between Nightwing and Tim Drake’s Robin as a dynamic the film explores. He described it as an “older brother, younger brother sort of relationship” and named Tim Drake as one of his favorite comic book characters.

The Knightfall Story So Far: Bane Breaks the Bat

Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest is the middle chapter of a three-film animated adaptation of the Knightfall comic storyline, which ran across multiple Batman titles in 1993 and 1994 . The first film, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, was released digitally on August 25, 2026, and on physical media on September 8, 2026.

The story begins with Bane, a villain whose strength and strategy are matched only by his patience, wearing Batman down through a series of escapes and battles. Bane then breaks Bruce Wayne’s back inside Wayne Manor — a moment that leaves Bruce paralyzed from the waist down and unable to continue as Batman.

Part 1 ended on that defeat. Part 2 picks up with Bruce recovering and making a decision that drives the rest of the saga: he chooses Jean-Paul Valley, the man also known as Azrael, to wear the cowl in his absence. The official synopsis states the central question plainly:

“Batman lies broken at the hands of the villainous mastermind Bane. With Bruce Wayne paralyzed from the waist down and unable to continue as Batman, a new successor must be chosen to defend Gotham City. Jean-Paul Valley, the man also known as Azrael, must take up the mantle of the Batman. But will his more violent methods be enough to stop Bane?”

The film adapts the Knightquest: The Crusade and Knightquest: The Search portions of the comic, which show Jean-Paul’s descent into a more brutal, more violent version of Batman — and which establish why Bruce’s choice was a mistake he would later have to undo.

Who Voices the Cast in Knightquest

The voice cast is led by Anson Mount as Bruce Wayne / Batman. Mount is known for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and previously voiced Batman in Part 1. Michael Mando, known for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Better Call Saul, voices Bane. Pablo Schreiber voices Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael.

Supporting cast members include Jack Griffo as Tim Drake / Robin, Bruce Boxleitner as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Simon Templeman as Alfred Pennyworth, Toks Olagundoye as Dr. Shondra Kinsolving, Jessica Camacho as Renee Montoya, David Dastmalchian as The Riddler, Jason Flemyng as Mad Hatter, Mick Wingert as Harvey Bullock, and Andrew Morgado as Victor Zsasz.

The film is directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams, based on characters from DC. Rick Morales serves as supervising producer, with Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau as producers. Sam Register and Michael E. Uslan are executive producers.

Release Details: When and Where to Watch

Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest arrives on Tuesday, December 15, 2026, on digital platforms, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The film runs 76 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence. The digital and physical releases include two special features:

  • “Azrael Batman: The Next Knight” — a featurette on adapting and redesigning the 1990s Azrael costume for modern animation.
  • “Knightfall: To Kill… Or Not to Kill” — a discussion with the cast, crew, and DC experts on the moral divide between Batman’s no-kill rule and Azrael’s willingness to use lethal force.

Screenwriter Jeremy Adams explained in the Azrael featurette why the character’s 1990s excesses translate well to animation:

“In the 90s, Batman was a character that, through sheer force of will, trained himself to become this vigilante. But by the end of the 90s, when you had the kind of extreme versions of characters, nobody was okay with just a man in a cape with a couple of batarangs. They wanted flaming swords and muscles and pouches and hoods and extreme violence. Azrael’s one of those people that you can see the real violence that everybody was kind of clamoring for.” — Jeremy Adams, screenwriter

Why the Nightwing Clip Matters Beyond One Scene

The clip’s importance is not only that Nightwing wins or loses a fight. It is that he is given a fight worth watching in a film whose main narrative is about Bruce Wayne’s failure and Jean-Paul Valley’s rise. Nightwing’s presence adds a third perspective: the original partner who has already stepped out of Batman’s shadow and now has to watch someone else put on the suit.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall earned strong audience scores, including a 95% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some viewers calling it the best animated Batman film since Mask of the Phantasm. That reception raised expectations for Part 2, and the Nightwing clip is the first extended look at how the sequel handles the wider Bat-family.
