Chris Evans has firmly rejected rumors that he will reprise his role as Captain America in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The actor, who last appeared as Steve Rogers in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, addressed the speculation in a recent interview with Esquire.

Denies Report on Marvel Return

Evans, 43, responded to claims that he would be part of the 2026 Avengers: Doomsday. He dismissed the rumors, stating, “That’s not true.” The actor explained that such reports surface regularly and that he no longer pays much attention to them. “I’ve just stopped responding to it,” Evans added with humor. “Yeah, no — happily retired!”

The New Captain America: Sam Wilson

Marvel fans are already familiar with the transition of the Captain America mantle. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, took on the iconic shield and now leads in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Mackie, who spoke to Esquire, revealed that he had recently asked Evans about the rumors, but Evans remained consistent in his stance. “He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired,’” Mackie shared.

Evans’ Recent Marvel Cameo

Although Evans has closed the door on returning as Captain America, he did make a brief appearance in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, reprising his role as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, from the Fantastic Four films.

Other Marvel Returns

Evans isn’t the only original Avenger rumored to return. Robert Downey Jr., who famously portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man, is confirmed to appear in the MCU’s upcoming Avengers films, albeit as the villain Doctor Doom. This revelation came during San Diego Comic-Con 2024, where it was also confirmed that Downey and other actors would not be reprising their superhero roles.

Evans’ Commitment to Retirement

While fans continue to hope for his return, Evans remains resolute. He emphasized in a November 2023 appearance on The View that despite frequent rumors, no one from Marvel has approached him about returning as Captain America. Evans, who left the role after Avengers: Endgame, has made it clear that he is content with his decision to retire from the MCU.

Captain America: Brave New World will hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
