James Gunn has confirmed that Darkseid is coming to the DC Universe. The iconic villain will make his debut in the upcoming animated series Mister Miracle, which is part of Gunn’s new DCU slate. The showrunner for the series, Tom King, has also revealed that casting for Darkseid is already underway.
Gunn recently teased the addition of two major DC characters. He was asked on Threads whether characters like General Zod, Doomsday, Doctor Fate, Black Adam, Ultraman, or Darkseid would appear. His response was simple: “Two of them in not too long.” While the second character remains a mystery, Darkseid is almost certainly one of them.
Darkseid Will Debut in ‘Mister Miracle’ Animated Series
The Mister Miracle series will be the first place where audiences see the new DCU version of Darkseid. The show is based on the acclaimed comic book run by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. It will explore the story of Scott Free, also known as Mister Miracle, and his wife Big Barda.
Darkseid is the ruler of Apokolips and a central figure in that story. He is responsible for the torture and cruelty that Scott Free endured, which led him to escape to Earth. In the comic series, Darkseid is a shadow that hangs over the entire narrative, representing ultimate evil.
The show is officially canon to the DCU. This means that the events in Mister Miracle will have consequences for other live-action projects. It also means the voice actor for Darkseid in the animated series is likely to play the character in live-action as well.
Why Darkseid Will Not Be the DCU’s Main Villain
Gunn has been clear that Darkseid will not be the main antagonist of the early DCU. There are two main reasons for this. First, he feels Darkseid is very similar to Marvel’s Thanos, who was the central villain of the Infinity Saga. Gunn stated, “They are obviously very similar; they look very similar.”
Second, Gunn respects what Zack Snyder did with the character. He said, “Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way.” In an interview, Gunn explained, “Using Darkseid as the big bad right now is not necessarily the thing, for a lot of reasons. Because Zack did it so cool in his way and because of Thanos in Marvel.” This approach allows Gunn to focus on other stories and villains without rushing Darkseid into the spotlight.

When Will We See Darkseid’s Official Reveal?
Fans may not have to wait long for the official reveal. DC Studios is set to have a presentation at the Annecy Festival on Thursday, June 25. During this event, they are expected to showcase the Mister Miracle series. This would be the perfect time to announce the voice cast, including the actor playing Darkseid.
Tom King previously confirmed that casting was happening and that announcements were imminent. He also hinted that the actor chosen for Darkseid might surprise people. He said, “There were some people where it was, that’s not what I expected, but that is Darkseid.”
While Gunn’s DCU is taking a different approach, the confirmation of Darkseid’s arrival is still big news. His presence in the Mister Miracle series will help build the larger cosmic stakes of the universe. This setup could eventually lead to a major role for the villain in a future live-action project.
