Global Punjabi music icon Diljit Dosanjh is known today for selling out stadiums worldwide and making history at Coachella. But the superstar recently opened up about a time when fame was a distant dream. In a conversation on the podcast Q with Tom Power, Diljit recalled his humble beginnings. He shared that after his debut album in 2002, he was performing at small birthday parties and weddings. The payment? Sometimes as little as ₹5,000.
Diljit revealed that he never refused any work. The money was crucial for survival. In a deeply personal moment, he also spoke about his childhood in poverty. He remembered a time when his family could not afford a visit to the doctor.
The Struggle That Shaped a Superstar
During his interview with host Tom Power, Diljit didn’t hold back about his past. He described his family as “below-average” financially. “If you got sick, you wouldn’t have money to go to the doctor, so don’t get sick because you don’t have money,” he said, recalling the harsh reality of his early life. This fear of financial instability pushed him to work relentlessly. His goal was simple: to become “rich and famous”.
The turning point came after the release of his debut album. Diljit Dosanjh was under a contract when a few people approached his company. They wanted to book him for a birthday party. Initially, he wasn’t interested in singing at private events, but he accepted because he had to. However, when he received the payment, he realized this was a path to financial security.
Diljit Dosanjh’s Grind: Saying Yes to Every Gig
Diljit soon understood that album sales alone were not enough. Live performances became his biggest source of income. He started accepting every offer that came his way. Whether it was a small birthday party or a wedding, he took the gig. He shared that he didn’t turn down anyone.
“I didn’t say no to anybody. If someone offered ₹5,000, ₹10,000, ₹15,000, I said yes. I didn’t say no to anybody. I went everywhere day and night,” Diljit Dosanjh recalled. This work ethic turned into “an addiction” to earning money and building a better life. He was determined to never return to the poverty of his childhood.
The Decision to Stop Performing at Weddings
Despite the money, Diljit Dosanjh eventually stopped performing at weddings. He explained that some senior artists in the Punjabi music industry looked down on his wedding shows. They implied that this was the only circuit he belonged to.
Instead of arguing, Diljit decided to prove them wrong. “I said, ‘Okay, I am not doing wedding shows now. I am going to start my concerts,’” he stated. He believed in the power of Punjabi music. He loved Michael Jackson and wanted to bring his own culture’s music to a global level. He then focused on organizing his own concerts, which eventually led to the sold-out shows we see today.
From the Gurdwara to Madison Square Garden
Diljit’s journey began long before the birthday parties. He started singing religious hymns in his local gurdwara as a young boy. From there, he moved to weddings and local gigs. Canada played a huge role in his international success. It was the first place outside India where he performed. His 2024 concert in Vancouver had 54,000 people in attendance.
He is now the first Punjabi artist to sell out the famous Madison Square Garden. When he performs, he doesn’t forget his roots. He often feels the presence of legends who paved the way. “I swear to my music… Chamkila, please look, look at this Madison Square Garden through my eyes,” he shared.
