The fourth episode of Dutton Ranch arrived on Paramount+ on May 29, 2026, bringing both heartbreak and new faces to the Yellowstone spin-off. Titled “Start With a Bullet,” the episode forced Beth and Rip to make an impossible choice with their cattle herd while introducing viewers to several fresh characters in the Texas ranch drama.
A Devastating Blow Hits the Dutton Ranch
The episode picks up right after the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak was discovered. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) learn that the prized herd they bought with the Edwards Ranch has been infected. The disease came from a single steer they purchased at auction, which had forged vet paperwork giving it a false clean bill of health.
Veterinarian Everett McKinney (Ed Harris) confirms the worst. To stop the disease from spreading across Texas, Rip has no choice but to kill every single animal in their herd. The scene shows Rip, Zachariah (Marc Menchaca), and Azul (J.R. Villarreal) digging a large trench and then shooting the cows one by one. Beth calls it a “funeral” for their business and their dreams.
Menchaca, who plays ranch hand Zachariah, called the sequence “a pretty somber sequence to shoot” and mentioned it was “quite hectic because we did have to get all these cattle in one area.”
After the slaughter, Rip tracks down the cattle broker who sold them the diseased animal. He forces the man to leave Rio Paloma that same night and burns his trailer down as revenge. But the damage is already done. The Dutton Ranch now has no cattle and no clear path forward.
Ray McKinnon Joins as Dwight White
Episode 4 also introduces a significant new character. Dwight White, played by Ray McKinnon, meets Carter (Finn Little) when the boy skips school and goes looking for work on another ranch.
Dwight is an Alpine, Texas-born cowboy who seems lonely and in need of company. He tells Carter upfront that he cannot pay him but will feed him. Carter spends the day helping Dwight around the property while Dwight drinks beer and shares life lessons. Dwight calls this the “school of life” when Carter worries about Beth finding out he skipped class.

The biggest surprise comes when Dwight earns enough trust in Carter to show him something hidden on the property. A large cage contains a full-blooded African leopard named Xena. Dwight got the animal online from a man in Arkansas.
Ray McKinnon, 68 years old, has nearly 100 acting credits to his name. His career began with a role in Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. He has appeared in Apollo 13, Sons of Anarchy, Mayans M.C., Deadwood, Dopesick, Justified, and many other shows. He also created and starred in the Peabody Award-winning Sundance TV series Rectify and won an Oscar for his short film The Accountant.
Annette Bening and Ed Harris Share a Quiet Moment
A key scene in Episode 4 brings Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and Everett McKinney (Ed Harris) together on Beulah’s ranch. Everett gets called to the Jackson property because of a pregnant mare that needs help. But when he arrives, he finds no pregnant mare. Beulah made the whole thing up just to spend time with him.
The two sit on a sofa and talk about retirement, their past, and their dreams of leaving the ranch life behind. Beulah asks Everett, “Never thought about a final ride?” The moment turns uncomfortable when Everett brings up Beulah’s son, Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney), who has gone to rehab for the third time.

Beulah responds simply, “Some do,” referring to her own son. The scene reveals that Everett and Beulah share a deep history that the show will likely explore further in upcoming episodes.

Episode 4 also deepens the rivalry between Beth and Beulah. Beth drives Oreana home after finding her in bed with Carter. When Beulah approaches Beth and offers to “bury the hatchet” over a drink, Beth refuses. Beulah warns that Rio Paloma is a small town, but Beth drives away without backing down.
Natalie Alyn Lind, who plays Oreana, told TV Insider that her character’s relationship with her father Rob-Will is “real messy” and that he is “not the perfect model of a dad.” She said Oreana has her father’s “fiery” spirit but is trying to break free from her family’s generational trauma.
Kelly Reilly praised the addition of Beulah to the Dutton Ranch universe. She said the original Yellowstone series was “very male-oriented” and Beth “was the only real powerhouse of a woman.” Reilly called Beulah a character Beth can “relate to and see herself in.”
Dutton Ranch airs new episodes every Friday on Paramount+ and the Paramount Network at 8 PM ET/PT. Episode 5 will continue following Beth and Rip as they figure out how to rebuild after losing everything.
