Episode 1 Recap and Character Story Progress

Episode 1, titled “I Was a Faceless, Evil NPC,” introduced audiences to Pia Rockwell, the timid protagonist of the series. During a severe fever at the age of 10, Pia recovered memories of her past life as a Japanese graduate student and paleontologist. She realized she had been reincarnated as a minor villainess in the otome game “Caroline and the Rainbow Magic Sweets.” In the game’s original storyline, Pia faces a tragic ending: her engagement is broken off at her graduation party, and she is judged and banished from the kingdom. Determined to avoid this fate, Pia decided to break off her engagement with Rufus Stan, the son of the Chancellor, before the game’s plot could unfold. Rufus, described as a proud and cunning young man, instead made a bet with her about their future together, refusing to let the engagement end. This bet forms the central premise of the series. Pia’s past life as a paleontologist also shapes her character in her new world, as her knowledge of fossils and scientific rigor becomes a unique trait that sets her apart from other characters in the genre. Miku Ito voices Pia Rockwell, and Ryota Osaka voices Rufus Stan in the Japanese language version of the anime. The supporting cast includes Rina Hidaka as Caroline Ramsey, the heroine of the otome game, and Sora Amamiya as Erin White, Pia’s friend.

What to Know About the Bet and Pia’s Timid Nature

The core conflict of the series revolves around the bet between Pia and Rufus. After Pia attempts to end their engagement, Rufus, the proud son of the chancellor, proposes a wager that will determine their future. Pia’s super timid personality is a direct result of her fear of being hated and her desire to avoid the villainess route entirely. She becomes extremely cautious and shy, hoping to live a quiet life and escape the condemnation event at the graduation ball. The dynamic between Pia’s timid nature and Rufus’s shrewd, confident personality drives the romantic comedy and fantasy elements of the show. The anime is adapted from the light novel series written by Hiro Oda with illustrations by Tsubasa, which began publication in 2021 and currently has four volumes. A manga adaptation by Aji Murata is also ongoing. The anime is directed by Nobuaki Nakanishi, with Hiroko Fukuda overseeing scripts and Jumondo handling animation production. The opening theme song, “Gōki MAX Sengen,” is performed by Konomi Suzuki, and the ending theme, “Yoake Made ni,” is performed by Miku Itō.
