The cult classic Dil Chahta Hai recently marked 25 years since its release. To celebrate the milestone, the cast and crew came together for a reunion. During this meeting, director Farhan Akhtar and actor Aamir Khan shared a behind-the-scenes story from the filming of one of the movie’s most intense scenes. They revealed that Akshaye Khanna had to slap Aamir Khan 17 times for a single scene. What makes this revelation surprising is that all the slaps were real. By the time the shot was perfect, Aamir Khan‘s face was swollen on one side.
The Real Slap Scene That Shook the Sets
The scene in question takes place during the interval of Dil Chahta Hai. Akshaye Khanna‘s character, Sid, slaps Aamir Khan‘s character, Aakash. The slap happens after Sid admits his love for Tara and Aakash makes a hurtful comment about their relationship. This moment creates a major rift between the two friends that lasts until the end of the film.
During the reunion interaction with Yuvaa, Saif Ali Khan, who was also present, asked a simple question: “Was it a real slap?” Farhan Akhtar immediately confirmed that it was indeed real. He recalled how he had planned the shot to get a genuine reaction from Aamir Khan.
Farhan Akhtar explained his direction to Akshaye Khanna. He said he told Akshaye that Aamir was expecting the slap at the end of a specific dialogue line. So, he instructed Akshaye to deliver the slap while Aamir was still saying the line. This small change added an element of surprise.
“I told Aamir that he is really going to slap you, and Aamir said cool. But I told Akshaye that he’s expecting it at the end of this line, so do it while he is saying the line – that way there’s an element of surprise.”
Aamir Khan’s Dedication to Authenticity
What started as a plan for a single real slap in a wide shot turned into something much more intense. Farhan Akhtar shared that after the first real slap, Aamir Khan insisted on continuing with real slaps for all the other camera angles and close-up shots. Aamir felt that the real impact was helping him get into the right frame of mind for the character.
“Then Aamir said, let it happen because it’s bringing me into a frame of mind which is helping me. He kept insisting on being slapped again and again.”
Aamir Khan himself explained why he pushed for the real slaps. He said that when you actually slap someone, it changes the feeling of the scene. It makes the performance more genuine.
“It works, you know. Even the angle. When you actually slap someone, it works.”
The team ended up shooting the scene 17 times to get all the required angles. Farhan Akhtar recalled the physical toll it took on Aamir Khan. He remembered that by the time they finished, Aamir‘s face had visible marks and was swollen on one side.
“By the time we finished, I remember he had a full mark on his face. It was almost swollen on one side.”
Why a Slap Was the Right Choice
Farhan Akhtar also explained his creative decision to use a slap instead of a more violent action. He believes that between friends, a slap carries a lot of weight. It is a massive event that does not need to be escalated into something more physical.
“I think between friends, when a friend slaps another friend, it’s a massive happening, so I don’t think you need to push it any further than that. I mean, between friends, a slap is more than enough.”
Not the Only Slap on Set
The conversation about slaps did not end with Aamir Khan and Akshaye Khanna. Actress Suchitra Pillai, who played Saif Ali Khan‘s on-screen girlfriend in the film, also shared her experience. She recalled that she had to slap Saif Ali Khan in a scene. She was nervous and asked Farhan Akhtar how to do it. He simply told her to go ahead and slap him for real.
Suchitra Pillai revealed that she slapped Saif Ali Khan three times. She later met Saif‘s mother, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, and told her she was the girl who slapped her son. Sharmila Tagore reportedly replied, “I hope it was a hard one”.

Dil Chahta Hai was Farhan Akhtar‘s directorial debut. It was released in 2001 and starred Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna in lead roles. The film also featured Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia. The movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. It is still remembered as one of the most defining films about friendship and growing up in Indian cinema.
