Disney+’s upcoming Korean original series The Remarried Empress has found itself at the center of a major online debate. The drama’s teaser trailer, which dropped on August 26, 2026, broke records with 11.7 million global views within 24 hours — the highest ever for a Disney+ Korean original series trailer. But the numbers tell only half the story. While the trailer drew massive attention, viewer reactions have been sharply divided. Some are calling it the long-awaited “Korean Bridgerton,” while others say the lavish Western-style costumes and sets look more like expensive cosplay.
Record Views and Mixed Reactions

On social media and community forums, praise and criticism came side by side. Supporters wrote things like:

Navier agrees—but only if she gets permission to remarry Prince Heinrey (Lee Jong-suk) of the Western Kingdom.
The drama keeps the original Western-inspired setting. Character names like Navier and Sovieshu stayed the same. Filming reportedly took place in Prague, Czech Republic, and Germany to recreate the European-style world of the original story.
This choice is what draws the Bridgerton comparison. Viewers see Korean actors in European royal costumes, speaking Korean in grand Western-style palaces. For some, that feels fresh and exciting. For others, it feels jarring.
“Surprise” Reenactment Criticism
The criticism didn’t stop at cosplay. Many online users compared the teaser to reenactment scenes from the long-running Korean TV program Mysterious TV Surprise. Comments like “It looks like a high-budget version of Surprise” and “It reminds me of a reenactment drama from Surprise” appeared frequently.
Some viewers also found it awkward to hear Korean actors use Western names. One person wrote:
“I’ve never watched a drama hoping the characters wouldn’t feel Korean.”

The production company Studio N faced a similar choice before with another romance-fantasy adaptation. The First Night with the Duke, which aired on KBS2 in 2025, took the opposite approach. That drama transformed its Western-inspired source material into a Korean historical drama. The heroine’s name changed from “Ripley de Liverpool” to “Cha Seon-chaek”.
The original author of that work explained that the changes were meant to make the story feel more familiar and accessible to viewers.
The Remarried Empress chose a different path. It kept the Western setting, the European locations, and the original character names. That decision has put the visual disconnect front and center in the public conversation.
The Nazi Medal Controversy
This isn’t the first controversy surrounding the drama’s costumes. In November 2025, Studio N issued a formal apology after viewers spotted a medal on Ju Ji-hoon’s costume that resembled a Nazi decoration.
The medal in question looked similar to the Nazi 3rd-class gold long-service medal. Social media users raised concerns quickly, and the production team responded. Studio N sent a statement to Korean media outlet OSEN:
“We sincerely apologize for the discomfort caused by the recent issue with the costume prop.”
The company also said it would replace the images and implement stricter review procedures to prevent similar problems in the future.
