BTOB‘s Yook Sungjae and WJSN‘s Bona star in the upcoming fantasy rom-com drama The Haunted Palace, where their romance is dramatically interrupted by an 8-foot-tall evil spirit.
SBS has released the first teaser for ‘The Haunted Palace’ during the 2024 SBS Drama Awards on December 21. The drama is set against the historical backdrop of the Joseon dynasty, blending romance with fantasy elements.
Plot and Characters
In the teaser, Yook Sungjae plays Yoon Gap, a royal library inspector and son of a concubine, while Bona portrays Yeo Ri, the granddaughter of a renowned shaman, who possesses unique spiritual abilities. The two characters, who are each other’s first love, are seen reuniting with an intent to share their lives.
However, their love story takes a dark turn with the introduction of Gang Cheol Yi, played by Kim Young Kwang, an imugi (a mythical serpent-like creature) with a vendetta against the king. This spirit can only be seen by Yeo Ri, complicating their relationship further as it possesses Yoon Gap’s body, aiming to wreak havoc on the royal family of Hanyang.
Kim Ji Hoon takes on the role of King Yi Sung, a reformist monarch focused on building a strong nation, who must now confront this supernatural threat, unaware that the imugi has regained its formidable 8-foot stature.
Yoon Gap and Yeo Ri are depicted in romantic scenes, showcasing their connection and affection.
The twist comes with Gang Cheol Yi‘s intrusion, turning Yoon Gap into a vessel for revenge, which changes his personality and threatens his bond with Yeo Ri.
The teaser ends on a note of conflict as Yeo Ri decides to aid Yoon Gap in exorcising the spirit, while King Yi Sung prepares for a battle against this unseen enemy.
Production and Premiere
Directed by Yoon Sung Shik and written by Yoon Soo Jung, ‘The Haunted Palace’ promises to explore themes of love, revenge, and spiritual battles within a historical context. The drama is scheduled for a premiere in 2025, but no specific release date has been announced yet.
