Gary Oldman believes the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series can offer a fuller experience than the original movies. The actor, who played Sirius Black in four films, shared his thoughts in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. He explained that the films had to cut a large amount of character detail because of their runtime. The new series, he feels, will stay much closer to the books. The first season is set to arrive on December 25, 2026.
Why Oldman Thinks the Series Will Be More Satisfying
Oldman compared the two formats directly. The movies, he said, faced tight limits when adapting J.K. Rowling’s long novels.
“We had to cut a lot, and still we could only get the films down to, like, three hours. A lot of character detail was sacrificed.”
He added that he expects the HBO version to adapt the books “pretty much word-for-word.” For a viewer, he said, that approach would be more satisfying. His comments come from his own experience on set. Sirius Black appeared in the films but had limited screen time. Oldman has said before that the character “wasn’t in it enough.”
The films ran from 2001 to 2011. Oldman joined the cast in 2004 for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He returned for Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, and Deathly Hallows Part 2. In the books, Sirius has a deeper role in Harry’s life. The films could not include every part of his history or his ties to the wider wizarding world.
What the HBO Series Will Cover
HBO is building the series as a long-form retelling. Each of the seven books will become one season. The first season is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It will have eight episodes. The plan is for the full series to run across roughly a decade.
Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and writer. Mark Mylod directs several episodes and executive produces. J.K. Rowling is also an executive producer. The first season has already wrapped. A second season, based on Chamber of Secrets, is in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London.
HBO has already renewed the show for a second season before the first one airs. Jon Brown, a writer on season one, will serve as co-showrunner for season two. This early renewal shows strong confidence in the project.

The series features an all-new cast. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger. Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley.
The adult cast includes several well-known names. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer plays Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape. Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid. Rory Wilmot plays Neville Longbottom. Lox Pratt plays Draco Malfoy.
Other cast members include Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick. Johnny Flynn plays Lucius Malfoy. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby play Petunia and Vernon Dursley. Katherine Parkinson plays Molly Weasley. Bertie Carvel plays Cornelius Fudge.
HBO has not yet announced who will play Sirius Black in the series. Oldman has said in the past that he would be open to playing Dumbledore in a future season, though no talks have been confirmed.

Oldman Remains Proud of the Films
Even with his hopes for the series, Oldman holds warm feelings for the movies. He said he is proud and grateful to have been part of the franchise.
“It is such a phenomenon, the like of which I don’t think you’re ever gonna see again.”
He also gave credit to director Chris Columbus. Columbus directed the first two films and helped build the world and assemble the original cast. Oldman noted that the team was “extraordinarily lucky” to have actors who could return across multiple films and grow into their roles.
