Ahead of the show’s second season launch, director Jim Field Smith stated the goal was for Sam Nelson to start the new season as a “completely different character” from the man left behind after the plane hijacking. This is not just a new crisis in a new location; it is a deeper exploration of a person altered by trauma.
Idris Elba has also spoken about this shift, noting his character will be both “physically and psychologically different” in the upcoming episodes. The director’s vision for this change is immediate. Jim Field Smith stated, “In the very first frame when the camera resolves on him this season, you’re supposed to think, ‘What the hell’s happened to this guy?’”
Why Sam Nelson Had to Change for Season 2
The decision to change the main character was a deliberate creative choice. After surviving the terrifying events of a seven-hour flight hijacking, the character could not simply be reset for another adventure. The team wanted to show the lasting impact of that trauma.
Field Smith explained the necessity of this change, saying, “I think for Idris… to come back and do it again, Sam had to be in a completely different position emotionally.” The new season intends to push the character to his limits, asking how far a person can be pushed before they break. The director added, “We wanted to see how far we could push him. What would push Sam to the extreme?”
This approach moves the story beyond a simple repeat of the first season’s successful formula. It explores the human cost of being a hero in extreme situations.
A New Crisis on a Berlin Underground Train
The setting for Sam Nelson’s next trial is as claustrophobic as an airplane but presents new challenges. Season 2 moves the action to Berlin, where an underground train and its passengers are taken hostage.
Above ground, authorities scramble to respond, while Sam Nelson finds himself once again at the center of the crisis. The new location of a moving subway train deep under a foreign city adds layers of isolation and complexity.
In a recent interview, Idris Elba discussed the power of this new setting, saying, “It felt really powerful to let Sam physically and emotionally get lost underneath this city.” The confined space, foreign language, and unfamiliar environment strip Sam of his usual control and force him to rely on raw instinct.
Returning and New Faces for the Second Season
Idris Elba leads a cast that blends familiar faces with new talent. Returning from the first season are Christine Adams, Max Beesley, and Archie Panjabi.
The new season introduces several actors to the thriller’s tense world. The new cast members include Christian Näthe, Clare-Hope Ashitey, and Lisa Vicari. They are joined by seasoned actors Toby Jones, Karima McAdams, and Christiane Paul.
These new characters are expected to interact with a more vulnerable and uncertain Sam Nelson, testing his changed methods and resolve.
