Netflix dropped all eight episodes of the new Korean horror thriller If Wishes Could Kill on April 24, 2026. The show follows a group of high school friends who discover the Girigo app, a program that grants any wish. But there is a deadly catch. Each wish comes with a 24-hour countdown. When the timer hits zero, the person dies.
The show blends tech horror with old Korean folklore. Viewers stayed hooked until the final moment. The ending left many questions, especially about Na Ri and whether the curse is truly gone.
The Girigo App Rules
The story begins with five friends: Se ah, Geon woo, Na ri, Ha joon, and Hyeon wook. Their normal school life changes when Hyeon wook shows them an app called Girigo. He used it to get perfect scores on a math test. Nobody takes it seriously at first. That changes when Hyeon wook dies in a shocking way right in front of his classmates.
The app works with simple rules. A person films themselves making a wish with their name and birthdate. The wish comes true. But death follows within 24 hours. The only way to stop the countdown is to get someone else to make a wish. This creates a deadly chain where friends must choose between their own lives and others.
Where the Curse Actually Came From
The app was not always evil. A student named Kwon Si won first created it for a coding contest. Her friend Do Hye ryung helped her design it. But a misunderstanding turned their friendship sour. Si won publicly humiliated Hye ryung. The shame drove Hye ryung to use dark magic she learned from Si won’s shaman mother. She made a bloody wish on the app for revenge against Si won and then took her own life.
Before dying, Si won made her own wish. She wanted Hye ryung’s curse to last forever. This act turned the Girigo app into a permanent death trap. Both girls’ spirits became trapped, fueling the cycle of death that continues for years.
How Se ah Breaks the Curse
Se ah becomes the main person fighting the curse. After her boyfriend Geon woo ends up near death, she makes a wish to save him. This starts her own countdown. Ha joon, who secretly likes Se ah, takes her to his sister Ha sal. Ha sal is a powerful shaman who lives in the countryside.
The group first believes that destroying Hye ryung’s phone will end everything. They find it and break it. Nothing changes. Ha sal realizes the real source is Si won’s phone, the device she used to make her final wish. The curse cannot end until that phone is destroyed.
Ha sal enters the spirit world to fight Si won’s angry ghost. She uses herself as a voodoo doll, stabbing her own body to trap Si won’s spirit. Se ah finds the hidden server room where Si won died. She recovers the red phone and destroys it with one of Ha sal’s special arrows. The curse breaks. Si won and Hye ryung’s spirits finally find peace.

Na Ri’s Tragic Path and Dark Fate
Na ri has a painful story. She secretly loves Geon woo, but he is dating Se ah. Her jealousy grows throughout the series. On the night Hyeon wook shares the app, Na ri is drunk and upset. She wishes for the deaths of Hyeon wook and an older friend. She never believes the wish will actually work.
The curse uses her guilt and anger. Si won’s spirit controls Na ri, twisting her thoughts. She starts believing her friends want her dead. Fake texts and calls from the curse fuel her anger. By the final episodes, Na ri fully turns against her group. In the spirit world, she attacks Se ah, trying to stop her from destroying the curse source.
Se ah has no choice but to fight back. She beats Na ri badly. When the fight ends, Na ri is gone. The show never clearly shows her body in the real world. This leaves her fate uncertain.
The Post-Credits Scene That Changes Everything
The mid-credits scene delivers a shocking twist. Hyeon wook’s online friend from Discord breaks into the school at night. Someone on Discord has been guiding him. This person knows exactly where Na ri’s abandoned phone is. They also know the phone’s password.
When the friend finds the phone, the Girigo app is still there. Still working. Still waiting. The person logs into the phone using the Discord contact’s birthdate. That birthdate matches Na ri’s. This strongly suggests that Na ri, whether alive or as a vengeful spirit, is the one behind the messages.
If Na ri made a bloody wish before she died, then the curse has already started again. The open ending leaves room for more deaths. The cycle of the Girigo app may never truly stop.

If Wishes Could Kill delivers a clear message. The app is just a tool. Human emotions like jealousy, guilt, and anger give the curse its real power. Si won and Hye ryung’s pain created the original evil. Na ri’s unresolved feelings may keep it going.
The show ends with the surviving friends holding a ceremony for Hyeon wook. They do not hold one for Na ri. This shows the group still does not know her true fate. Bangwool, who gained the ability to see spirits after being injured, says he can now help Ha sal leave her protected compound.
But the horror is not fully gone. Evil does not simply disappear because its source is destroyed. As long as people make selfish wishes with dark intentions, something like Girigo can always return.
