Fans have been waiting for Kaithi 2 for seven long years. The 2019 action thriller, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, started the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) and became a huge success. But the sequel never happened. Now, actor Karthi has finally given an update. While promoting his upcoming film Sardar 2, he promised that Kaithi 2 will come after the release of his current project. He also made a fun comment about director Lokesh Kanagaraj, saying the filmmaker is too busy acting in other movies and “roaming around” to start the sequel.
Karthi’s Promise to Fans at the Sardar 2 Event
At a pre-release event for Sardar 2, the crowd kept shouting for updates on Kaithi 2. Karthi responded with a smile and a clear message. He told the audience that they need to watch Sardar 2 first before asking for the next chapter of the LCU.
“We’ll get it done, we’ll get it done. First, we’re releasing Sardar 2, so watch that. Then we’ll launch Kaithi 2. I’m happy for all the love.”
The actor assured everyone that the sequel is definitely happening. He also promised to talk to the director about it.
The Joke About Lokesh Kanagaraj Being ‘Busy Roaming Around’
Karthi did not stop at just promising the sequel. He also made a lighthearted comment about why Kaithi 2 has been delayed. He joked that director Lokesh Kanagaraj is currently busy with other work and not focusing on the sequel.
“I’ll have a word with Lokesh. He’s busy acting and roaming around right now.”
This joke refers to the fact that Lokesh Kanagaraj recently made his acting debut in the romantic drama DC, directed by Arun Matheswaran. The director is also busy producing other films like Benz and Mr Bhaarath. Karthi’s playful comment showed that he is just as eager as the fans to get the sequel started, but the director’s other commitments are getting in the way.
Sardar 2: What Fans Need to Know First
Before fans can expect Kaithi 2, they need to look forward to Sardar 2. The film is a spy thriller sequel to the 2022 movie Sardar. It is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on September 10, 2026. Karthi will reprise his dual role as Chandrabose and Vijay Prakash in the film.
The Sardar 2 trailer shows that the story begins with a past incident involving Karthi’s character, Chandrabose, also known as Sardar. Although he believed he completed a mission successfully, the damage from that mission continues to haunt him. Years later, the past comes back, and a new enemy named Black Dagger enters his path. The film also stars SJ Suryah as Black Dagger, along with Malavika Mohanan, Rajisha Vijayan, Ashika Ranganath, and Yogi Babu.
The Long Wait for Kaithi 2
The original Kaithi was released in 2019 and collected over ₹106 crore worldwide. It received great reviews and established the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. After its release, both Karthi and Lokesh Kanagaraj showed interest in making a sequel. Karthi even mentioned that the director only needed 30 days of his schedule to complete the sequel. Lokesh Kanagaraj also teased on social media that “Dilli will be back”.
However, the project faced multiple delays. Lokesh Kanagaraj went on to direct other big films like Master (2021), Vikram (2022), Leo (2023), and Coolie (2025). In 2022, Karthi said that Kaithi 2 would start after Lokesh finished his work with actor Vijay, but that never happened. More recently, Lokesh announced a project with Allu Arjun (AA 23), which pushed the timeline for Kaithi 2 even further.
Despite the delays, Lokesh Kanagaraj has confirmed that the LCU is not shelved. He has promised that Kaithi 2, Vikram 2, and the standalone Rolex film are all still part of his future plans.

Karthi’s Busy Work Schedule
Karthi has also been very busy with other projects. He appeared in the 2024 film Meiyazhagan and is now preparing for the release of Sardar 2. After Sardar 2, he has several other films in the pipeline, including Marshal and HIT: The Fourth Case. He is also set to work on his 30th film, directed by Kalyan Shankar, alongside Meenakshi Chaudhary.
