Apple TV’s crime thriller Lucky delivered its most intense episode yet on July 29. Episode 4, titled “Too Close to See It,” finally answered the question that has been puzzling viewers since the series began. Why did Cary Masterson drug his wife, steal $10 million, and disappear?
The episode does more than just explain his reasons. It shows how his choice to protect Lucky ultimately led to his death. The hour-long episode packs a car chase, emotional confrontations, and a shocking ending that changes everything for the remaining episodes.
Cary’s Betrayal Was Actually an Attempt to Protect Lucky
When Lucky (Anya Taylor-Joy) finally tracks down Cary (Drew Starkey) at his beach house hideout in La Jolla, California, she is ready for answers. She demands the 12-word seed phrase to his Bitcoin account where most of the stolen money sits. But Cary refuses, saying the money is not the solution to their problems.
Cary explains that he never actually betrayed her. He was trying to protect her from his mother, Priscilla (Annette Bening). After Priscilla got out of prison, she learned that Lucky had turned her in to the FBI. She threatened to kill Lucky unless Cary brought back the stolen money.
Cary finally confessed to Luciana, revealing the truth behind his betrayal, which ultimately led to his death by the episode’s end.
Cary admits he should have told Lucky the truth before leaving her. He drugged her after their night in Las Vegas, took the money, and planned to give it to his mother. But when he reached Priscilla, he saw her laughing with Dutch in her car. That moment changed everything.
A Flashback Shows Cary’s Change of Heart
The episode includes a flashback to the night Cary drugged Lucky and left her at the Las Vegas hotel. After taking the money to Priscilla, Cary realized he had spent his whole life in his mother’s shadow. He decided to abandon her wishes and return to his wife.
But when Cary got back to the hotel, police had already surrounded the building. He had no choice but to transfer the money into crypto, lease a property, and wait for Lucky to find him. He had full faith in her survival skills.
The flashback also reveals that Lucky had her own secrets. Years earlier, FBI Agent Billie Rand (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) convinced Lucky to become an informant against Priscilla. Rand promised protection for Lucky, Cary, and her father John (Timothy Olyphant). But Rand later admitted she could not secure immunity for John. John went to prison, and Lucky lost trust in the FBI.
The Car Chase Pushes the Couple Together
Just as Lucky starts to understand Cary’s side, the FBI shows up at his hideout. The couple escapes in Cary’s blue Bronco, breaking through the garage. What follows is a high-speed chase through San Diego with both the FBI and Priscilla pursuing them.
During the chase, Lucky confesses her own betrayals to Cary. She admits she intended to take the money for her father and helped the FBI put Priscilla behind bars. For a moment, it looks like the couple might reunite.
Lucky pulls a smart move and ditches their car under a bridge. They blend in with the crowd, but Priscilla and Dutch find them. Lucky steals another car, and the chase continues.
Cary did apologize for leaving Lucky out of the loop when it came to his plan — which was to initially give the money to his mob leader mother, Priscilla.
As the couple fears they might not make it, Lucky tells Cary she never regretted loving him. He assures her that nothing would ever change between them.
Cary Pays the Ultimate Price
Cary takes action to protect Lucky during the chase. He shoots at Priscilla and Agent Rand’s cars, targeting their tires. But the cops start firing back.
A bullet blows out one of Lucky’s tires. She loses control of the vehicle, and it flips multiple times. When Lucky wakes up, Cary is bleeding out beside her. He had been shot during the chase.
Before dying, Cary tells Lucky he does not regret their relationship. She kisses him goodbye and leaves the wreck before the FBI arrives. Priscilla reaches the crash site and breaks down after seeing her son’s body. Dutch physically restrains her as she screams in agony.
Drew Starkey Reacts to His Character’s Death
Drew Starkey, who plays Cary, called his character’s fate “shocking and tragic”. The Outer Banks actor told E! News that filming the death scene was “like shooting a play”.
It was an incredible experience. You see these two characters start off in a very, very hostile place, and then by the end they’re saying that they don’t regret being with each other still—and they still have this love for each other.
Starkey described the filming as “quite intense”. He and Taylor-Joy had to deal with practical challenges, including the cramped space of the wrecked car. Taylor-Joy’s first thought about the scene was “salty, sweaty, and bloody”.

Cary’s death removes Lucky’s only possible partner. It also gives Priscilla a personal reason to seek revenge. She now blames Lucky for what happened to her son.
The episode sets up Lucky’s journey for the remaining episodes. She must now deal with Cary’s death while avoiding both the FBI and a vengeful Priscilla. Episode 5 arrives on Apple TV on August 5.
