CBS has seemingly canceled every major storyline that was set up for Season 2 of “Marshals.” The Yellowstone spinoff’s Season 1 finale left viewers with three big cliffhangers, but promotional materials and official updates have already resolved them ahead of the October 4 premiere.
The procedural drama, which stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, became CBS’s biggest new scripted series of 2026. Its first season ended on May 24 with Cal and Belle under fire, Andrea packing for Washington, and Tate in the hands of a villain. New information about Season 2 shows all three stories moving in directions that differ from what the finale suggested.
The Season 1 Finale Left Three Big Questions
The final episode of Season 1, titled “Wolves at the Door,” spent its last act setting up major changes for the show’s main characters. Cal and Belle walked into a trap while investigating a lead tied to the East Camp land dispute. The episode cut to black before viewers learned whether they survived. Andrea Cruz accepted a job offer that would take her from Montana to Washington, D.C., and said her goodbyes to the team. Kayce’s son Tate left with Tom Weaver on what was supposed to be a fishing trip, unaware that Weaver was behind the attacks on Kayce’s home and the mining operation at Broken Rock.
These three storylines appeared to be shaping Season 2 into a more serialized drama, closer in tone to “Yellowstone” than to a standard CBS procedural.
Cal and Belle Survive the Ambush
Both Logan Marshall-Green and Arielle Kebbel are listed as cast members for Season 2 in official press releases. They also appear in episode stills and the Season 2 trailer. The trailer confirms that Cal and Belle are safe after the shootout that closed Season 1. In fact, the two characters appear to be getting closer romantically.
Marshall-Green addressed the cliffhanger in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I can confirm [Cal] is alive, but not necessarily unscathed,” he said. “I think I can confirm that for everybody in the damn show, because everybody’s going through it by the end of this thing.”
Kebbel also confirmed her return. “I am a part of season 2, yes,” she said. “We start filming [season 2] with a pick up of that [finale] moment.”
The early reveal of their survival undercuts the tension the finale worked to build. Instead of letting the question of their fate drive early Season 2 episodes, the show resolves it before the premiere even airs.
Andrea Cruz Does Not Leave Montana
Ash Santos returns as Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrea “Dre” Cruz in Season 2. Her character’s storyline in the finale suggested a permanent departure. Andrea accepted a job in Washington, D.C., packed up her locker, and told her colleagues goodbye.
The Season 2 trailer shows Andrea still in Montana. “I never had teammates who fight for each other the way that you do,” she says in the trailer, indicating she has chosen to stay with the team.
The Washington move appears to have been pulled back, removing what looked like a major shift in the show’s character dynamics.
Tate’s Kidnapping Resolved in the Premiere
The Season 2 premiere episode is titled “All Hat No Cattle.” CBS released an official synopsis that describes the episode’s plot. “When Kayce realizes Tate has been taken hostage, he goes rogue in a desperate race to save his son as the Marshals uncover a powerful criminal operation tied to the East Camp land grab,” the synopsis reads. “A violent showdown ensues, putting everything Kayce cares about at risk.”
The trailer already confirms that Brecken Merrill returns as Tate and that he is back with his father. The kidnapping, which seemed poised to become a season-long mystery, appears designed to be resolved within the first episode.

The Show Sticks to Its Procedural Format
“Marshals” differs from “Yellowstone” in its structure. The spinoff operates as a case-of-the-week procedural, with some serialized elements woven through the season. Season 2 will reportedly consist of 18 episodes, up from the 13 episodes of Season 1.
The quick resolution of the finale cliffhangers suggests the show is committing to its procedural format rather than leaning into long-form storytelling. New cast members for Season 2 include Marque Richardson as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns and an expanded role for Morgan Lindholm as Maddie, Cal’s estranged daughter. Jefferson White will also return as Jimmy Hurdstrom from “Yellowstone” in a recurring role, following the cancellation of the planned “6666” spinoff.
Release Date and Streaming Details
“Marshals” Season 2 premieres on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The episode will be available to stream the following day on Paramount+ for viewers in the United States.
Viewers in the UK, Canada, and Australia can expect new episodes on Paramount+ starting October 5, following the show’s established pattern from Season 1. For audiences in India, “Marshals” streams on Paramount+ as well, with new episodes typically arriving the day after the U.S. broadcast. The show is available globally through Paramount+ in most international markets, including regions where SkyShowtime carries the series.
The second episode is scheduled for October 11 at 8 p.m. ET, after which the show will settle into a weekly Sunday night schedule.
