Yash’s highly awaited film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups hit theaters on August 26, 2026. The movie, directed by Geetu Mohandas, features a star-studded cast including Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasanth. While the film opened to massive box office numbers, the audience response on social media has been a mix of shock, confusion, and plenty of humor. Memes have taken over the internet, with viewers sharing their honest and often funny reactions to the film.
Old Interview Clips Add Fuel to the Fire
As the film received mixed to negative reviews, social media users dug up old interviews of both Yash and Geetu Mohandas that quickly went viral. In a video from San Diego Comic-Con, Yash had confidently said about Toxic:
“I’m very sure that when they’re coming out of the theatre, they’ll be like blown. And they’ll say, ‘what the hell was that?’”
Netizens found this prediction hilarious and ironic, given the actual audience reactions. They shared the clip widely, using it as the perfect caption for their disappointment.
Similarly, an old interview of director Geetu Mohandas resurfaced where she openly discussed her filmmaking process:
“I write something, I shoot something else, I edit something else, and then the film is out. Then I’m happy. I never stick to the script. Even now, for my next film, I am meeting the producers, so when I am talking to them, one thing I kept telling them, ‘you are not going to get what you are reading.’”
This statement became a major talking point, with many viewers feeling it explained the film’s confusing narrative and lack of coherence.
Memes About Audience Walkouts Take Over Social Media
One of the most popular meme themes revolved around audiences wanting to leave the theater. An Instagram user posted a meme showing a person coming out of the cinema as the song Phir Se from Dhurandhar 2 plays in the background. The person looks like they are about to cry, looks at the exit, and then decides to stay back. The text at the end reads, “Balidan Paramon Dharam (Sacrifice is the supreme duty)”.
Another AI-generated meme showed Yash walking on the road but hiding in fear when he notices Ranveer Singh (from Dhurandhar) screaming and looking for him. He comes out of hiding only after the Dhurandhar actor leaves. “This meme has become so relevant now,” wrote an X user sharing the post.
One user on X took a sarcastic approach, writing:
“Trolls apart, Positive thing about #Toxic: People aren’t even using the exit door, Instead they’re using the same entry door to exit. Respect increased @TheNameIsYash.”
Another user described the audience response in harsh terms:
“#Toxic Review: Mass movie, but M silent. Unanimous walkout 2nd half in last 5 years after WFL. Pure Saaho vibes ochai post BB2.”
A recurring meme showed an audience member desperately trying to break the theater gate lock to escape, with the song Tabaahi playing in the background.
Ram Gopal Varma’s Social Media Post Adds to the Drama
On the day of Toxic‘s release, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma posted on social media that he was watching Dhurandhar again. Many interpreted this as a subtle dig at Toxic. The post quickly gained attention, with users flooding the comments section.
One user commented, “Bro is more toxic than #toxic.” Another wrote, “TOXIC Audience: What the hell was that?” A third user added, “Thank God Toxic wasn’t released against Dhurandhar. Would’ve been a huge failure.” Some even described Varma‘s post as “Ragebaiting Geetu Mohandas”.
Box Office Success Despite Negative Reviews
Despite the online criticism and memes, Toxic performed exceptionally well at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned an estimated Rs 101.10 crore net in India on its opening day across all languages. The worldwide gross collection stood at approximately Rs 140.75 crore.
The film ran across 24,579 shows on Wednesday, with total India gross collections reaching Rs 120.75 crore. The Hindi version was the biggest contributor, bringing in around Rs 55 crore net. The Kannada version followed with Rs 23.3 crore, while the Telugu version contributed Rs 16 crore. The Tamil and Malayalam versions added Rs 5.5 crore and Rs 1.3 crore, respectively.
This marked Yash‘s second Rs 100 crore opening after KGF: Chapter 2, proving his massive box office pull. The film’s opening day numbers placed it second among Indian films for the year, narrowly behind Dhurandhar 2‘s Rs 103 crore domestic opening.
Intimate Scenes Become a Major Talking Point
Yash and Kiara Advani‘s intimate scenes in Toxic went viral on social media shortly after the film’s release. The film’s adult tone was already evident before release, particularly through the song Tabaahi, which had sparked debate online.
One user wrote on X:
“Imagine Sid & Kiara sitting right next to Yash & Radhika watching this scene in theaters together.”
Another user commented:
“The same people who trolled and criticised Kiara Advani over #Tabahi will surely be the first ones lining up to watch #Toxic.”
The intimate content drew both praise and criticism, with some praising the actors’ chemistry while others questioned the relevance of such scenes to the plot.
BookMyShow Rating Controversy
Adding to the film’s eventful release, ticket-booking platform BookMyShow reportedly removed the ratings for Toxic from its platform. According to several posts on X, the ratings disappeared after the film received a poor response from audiences.
One X user alleged:
“BookMyShow disabled #Toxic movie ratings. It was so bad 5.5/10, worst in BMS history.”
Another user wrote:
“Toxic Book My show reviews disabled after disastrous ratings. How do you feel about this decision? According to me, by doing this the producer himself has proved that they have given up, they do not have confidence in their product. A cowardly decision.”
Some users linked the move to Yash‘s PR team, with one posting:
“Yash PR mafia has reportedly disabled the rating for #Toxic on BookMyShow after receiving a disastrous response from audience. Toxic had one of the worst ratings ever.”
The controversy led to wordplay around the film’s title, with one user posting:
“#BookMyShow has removed the ratings from their platform for #Toxic. Now this is toxicity at its peak.”
