Sparks of Tomorrow Episode 1 and 2 Recap

The first episode, titled “The Electric Boy,” introduces viewers to the world of Sparks of Tomorrow. The story takes place in an alternate Meiji-era Japan where steam powers everything. The pioneers who could have brought electricity to the world never lived long enough to make their mark. Instead, steam became the foundation of civilization.

Kihachi Sakamoto sits on a steam train with his older brother Seiroku. Seiroku carries a notebook called The Twentieth Century Electrical Catalog. Rather than filling its pages with copied ideas, Seiroku encourages Kihachi to dream of inventions that have never existed before. Their bond grows stronger during the Fifth National Industrial Technology Exhibition. Seiroku attempts something considered almost heretical in this steam-powered society: lighting electric lamps. The authorities chase him for challenging the accepted order. He returns to his younger brother with a promise: together, they will bring about the Age of Electricity.

The episode then jumps forward in time. Years pass, but the promised future never arrives. Kihachi has become cynical and alone.

Episode 2, titled “The Mysteries of the Catalog,” continues the story. Inako Momokawa, the 15-year-old second daughter of a sake brewer, lives in the Fushimi area of Kyoto. Nothing she does comes out right, and her father scolds her every day. Her only relief comes from her prayers to the gods.

One day at Fushimi Inari shrine, Inako meets Kihachi Sakamoto. He rejects the gods and boasts about the incoming age of electricity. Meanwhile, Inako’s father decides her marriage plans without asking her. She is about to give up hope when Kihachi draws out her true feelings of wanting to run away from her family.

The only way to stop her marriage is to find an unusual book called the Electricity Catalog. This book is a prediction book about electricity that Kihachi wrote when he was a child. His older brother Seiroku took the book, and its current location is unknown. Inako and Kihachi decide to search for the book together across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures.
