Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have another massive success on their hands. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The movie achieved this milestone in only six days of release. This makes it the second-fastest film in history to reach that number. Only Avengers: Endgame got there faster.

The Tom Holland-led superhero film continues to shatter expectations. It has already broken several major records. These include the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time. The movie’s success comes at a time when the superhero genre has faced challenges at the box office. But Spider-Man: Brand New Day proved that audiences still love seeing their favorite web-slinger on the big screen.

A Record-Breaking Run in Just Six Days

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit the $1 billion mark on Monday, August 3, 2026. The movie added $47 million domestically and $120 million globally on that single day. This pushed its worldwide total to $1.05 billion.

The film’s domestic total now stands at $407 million in the United States and Canada. International markets contributed $645.8 million to the overall haul. These numbers came from the movie’s performance across 66 international markets.

Only Avengers: Endgame reached the billion-dollar mark faster. That film earned $1.2 billion during its opening weekend in April 2019. For comparison, Avengers: Infinity War took 11 days to reach $1 billion in 2018. Spider-Man: No Way Home achieved the same feat in 12 days back in December 2021.

Beating The Odyssey at the Box Office

Spider-Man: Brand New Day also surpassed Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey at the worldwide box office. The Marvel film achieved this within just four days of release. The Odyssey had been running in theaters for 18 days at that point.

Both films feature Tom Holland and Zendaya in their casts. The two actors promoted both movies during a global press tour. They made stops in London, Paris, Rome, and Shanghai. Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman supported this decision. He received a call from Holland a year ago about the situation.

“We had to adjust our timing and our plan. Tom Holland, Zendaya along with Jon Bernthal fully supported both films and both films benefited. This reminds me of what the late great distribution exec Tom Sherak said, ‘A rising tide lifts all boats.’ When people go to the movies, they value experience and that’s what we’ve been needing to do in our business.”

Together, Brand New Day and The Odyssey powered last weekend’s three-day domestic box office total to a new record of $436.5 million.

Breaking Domestic Opening Weekend Records

Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially holds the title for the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history. The film earned $360 million in North America during its debut weekend. This total edged past Avengers: Endgame’s previous record of $357.1 million.

The movie also set several other domestic records:

  • Biggest Thursday preview gross in North American history with $72 million
  • Highest single-day opening gross with $169.8 million on Friday
  • Fastest film to hit $400 million domestically
  • Highest-grossing Monday ever with $47 million

The film opened in 4,487 theaters across North America. Its Friday earnings of $169.3 million surpassed the previous single-day record held by Endgame.

What Makes Brand New Day So Successful

The movie carries a production budget of $225 million. It was produced by Sony-owned Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Pascal Pictures. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film.

The cast includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker, Zendaya as MJ, and Jacob Batalon as Ned. New additions to the franchise include Sadie Sink in her MCU debut, along with Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo.

Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman shared his thoughts on why the movie connected with audiences.

“Whether you live in Peru, Pakistan, or Peoria, everyone wants friends and wants connection with everyone. Fundamentally this is a movie about friendship and hope.”

Rothman also explained the marketing strategy behind the film’s success.

“We led with emotion. We stayed with that emotion all the day (throughout the campaign). For all the whiz-bang, the audience doesn’t care about what a movie costs, they care about how it makes them feel. We kept the emotion and the character front and center.”

The first trailer for the film became the most watched ever with 719 million views in its first 24 hours. The movie earned an A CinemaScore and holds a 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Joining the Billion-Dollar Club of 2026

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth movie of 2026 to cross the $1 billion mark. The other films that achieved this feat are The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.001 billion), Michael ($1.001 billion), and Toy Story 5 ($1.067 billion). The Odyssey is also approaching the milestone with over $900 million worldwide.

The film is now the highest-grossing movie of 2026 worldwide. It passed Toy Story 5 on Tuesday to claim that title. Industry analysts project the movie could reach $2 billion in the coming weeks. Only seven other movies in history have achieved that feat.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently on pace to finish somewhere near the $2.33 billion total of Avatar: The Way of Water. That film stands as the highest-grossing movie of this decade.

The movie achieved its billion-dollar milestone without screening in IMAX theaters in North America. The Odyssey had an exclusive run in IMAX that ended this week. However, Spider-Man did have IMAX screenings in Japan, Korea, and China. In response to the film’s success, IMAX has decided to split screens with The Odyssey going forward.

The summer box office currently stands at $3.6 billion. This marks a 16.7% increase compared to last year. Analysts now hope the domestic box office could finally reach $10 billion by the end of the year. This would be the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
