The USS Enterprise crew faced their most intense test yet in “Off-Hour,” the sixth episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4. What started as a routine end-of-shift countdown turned into a real-time fight for survival when the ship got pulled into a dangerous slipstream wormhole. The episode, which aired on August 27, 2026, on Paramount+, put Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) at the center of the action. She used her medical knowledge and determination to save her friend and colleague, Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), while the rest of the crew worked to keep the ship from breaking apart.
The episode was written by Bill Wolkoff and directed by Dan Liu. It is a bottle episode that takes place entirely on the Enterprise, with a ticking clock counting down the minutes until the ship would be destroyed. The story unfolds in real time, making the danger feel immediate and very real for the characters.
A Normal Day Turns Deadly in Minutes
The episode begins with the crew counting down the minutes until the end of their shift. The Enterprise is heading to Starbase 7 for routine upgrades. Everyone is tired and ready for some time off. On the bridge, Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) is zoning out, and Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) reminds her to keep her “eyes on the skies.” Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) shares the good news that Ensign Rankin will be playing piano in the Port Galley later that night.
In sickbay, Chapel and M’Benga are preparing for the shift change. They talk about Dr. Philip Boyce (Brian Markinson), who is returning to the Enterprise. M’Benga admits he requested Boyce’s transfer because he wants someone capable of taking over sickbay if he ever leaves. This surprises Chapel, who says she would have to leave too if M’Benga goes. M’Benga points out that Chapel always seems to have one foot out the door, never committing to a permanent posting.
Meanwhile, in engineering, Scotty (Martin Quinn) and his team are dealing with a navigation alarm. He dismisses it as bad code and leaves at the end of his shift. But the glitch is not a small problem. The ship’s warp shield becomes unstable, and a slipstream wormhole is heading straight for them. Scotty orders an emergency engine shutdown, but it is too late. The Enterprise gets pulled into the wormhole.
M’Benga Gets Severely Injured While Protecting Chapel
The impact throws the ship into chaos. On the bridge, consoles spark and explode. Pike grabs an electrified panel and is thrown backwards. In engineering, radiation levels spike so high that there is no time to evacuate everyone before the doors seal. In sickbay, equipment tears loose. A magnetic lab table becomes a missile. M’Benga shoves Chapel out of the way and takes the full force of the impact.
The table pins M’Benga and essentially severs his body at the midsection. The only thing keeping him alive is the table itself, which is holding his organs and spine in place. Chapel scans him and realizes the injury is fatal if the table is moved. Dr. Boyce, who is treating the wounded in the port galley, orders Chapel to leave M’Benga and focus on patients she can save. But Chapel refuses. She tells Boyce she is having “communications problems” and stays by M’Benga’s side.
Chapel Uses Science and Courage to Save Her Friend
Chapel knows she has to find a way to save M’Benga. She remembers his research from Season 1, when he tried to save his terminally ill daughter, Rukiya. The answer was strong force neutrinos, which are particles that could “stitch” damaged tissue back together. The slipstream wormhole is full of these neutrinos.
Chapel comes up with a risky plan. She decides to freeze M’Benga to put him in a form of cryo-sleep. This would give her time to capture the neutrinos and use them to heal his injuries. She also realizes the neutrinos could be used to re-power the Enterprise’s fuel, solving two problems at once. Chapel works quickly, even as the temperature in sickbay drops dangerously low. She freezes M’Benga and then pushes the heavy table off him. In the process, the tip of her finger freezes, gets stuck to the table, and breaks off.
To get the neutrino data, Spock (Ethan Peck) has to spacewalk on the outer hull of the Enterprise. He absorbs a deadly amount of radiation during the spacewalk. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) follows him and rescues the injured Spock. Spock mind-melds with La’an to deliver the information Scotty needs. Scotty uses the neutrinos to get more fuel, which leads the ship to safety.
The Crew Works Together to Save the Ship
While Chapel fights to save M’Benga, the rest of the crew is dealing with their own crises. Pike takes a severe electrical shock to engage the shields. Ortegas uses the last bit of power on the dampeners so everyone stops sliding across the deck. Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) breaks her leg while manually resetting the gravity plating. Scotty gets trapped in a turbolift and has to be freed by A’Sha. He then makes the difficult call to shut down life support in the corridors to preserve power.
The episode is a masterclass in tension. A countdown clock appears on screen, ticking down the minutes until the ship would disintegrate. The crew members are scattered across the ship, unable to communicate easily. Each one has to use their skills and ingenuity to solve their part of the problem.
Babs Olusanmokun, who plays M’Benga, spoke about the emotional weight of the episode. He said his character was ready to give up after losing his daughter. But Chapel’s refusal to give up on him changed everything.
“He was ready to give up. His child is gone. In his head, he’s done the math and it’s all over. For Chapel to really grab him and be like, ‘Nah, dude, it’s not happening,’ in such a strong way — clearly she was not going to give up — that touched him deep inside: ‘There is still love for me in this world. There is somebody that will notice if I’m not around.’ That really stirred him on.”
