The biggest question heading into Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 was whether fan-favorite babysitter Steve Harrington would survive. After the episodes debuted on December 26, 2025, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Steve makes it through Volume 2 alive and well, though the path to the series finale is now paved with higher stakes for everyone .
Volume 2, consisting of episodes 5 through 7, answers major questions about the show’s mythology while setting a dangerous stage for the last battle. With the final episode, titled “The Right Side Up,” scheduled for release on New Year’s Eve, December 31, the threat to Hawkins and its heroes has never been greater .
The Answer to Steve Harrington’s Fate
The widespread fear that Steve would die in Volume 2 proved unfounded. He does not die and does not even face a severe near-death experience . The closest call comes in Episode 6, “Escape from Camazotz.”
While trying to reach Nancy and Jonathan with Dustin, Steve devises a risky plan to cross a collapsed section of Hawkins Lab using a ladder. Dustin breaks down, begging him not to be reckless.
Dustin tells him to stop being so reckless as he begins crying about not letting it happen again as he tearfully tells Steve he canโt lose him .
Dustinโs emotional intervention stops Steve, and the moment passes without harm. This scene also mends the rift between the two friends that had been growing since Volume 1 .
Major Character Status After Volume 2
No main characters die in Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 . However, several face extreme danger and pivotal personal moments.
Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers share what seems like a final moment trapped in a melting room within the Upside Down version of Hawkins Lab. With the walls turning to liquid around them, they have a heartfelt conversation where they finally admit their romantic relationship is over. Jonathan even produces an engagement ring he had been carrying and asks, “Nancy Wheeler, will you not marry me?” . They survive when the melting process suddenly stops, but their romantic partnership has ended .
Will Byers has a major emotional breakthrough. He confesses to his mother, brother, and friends that he is gay, sharing that Vecna had shown him a terrifying vision of a world where he was alone because of his sexuality .
Eleven learns a terrible secret from her sister, Kali. Kali reveals that the military scientist Dr. Kay has been trying to restart Dr. Brenner’s experiments by transfusing her blood into pregnant women. Kali explains that Brenner originally gave the children powers by infusing their mothers with Henry Creel’s blood, and that Eleven, as Henry’s perfect replica, would be Dr. Kay’s ultimate target . This revelation leads to a dire proposition from Kali.
New Revelations About the Upside Down and Vecna’s Plan
Volume 2 finally explains the true nature of the show’s central mystery. Dustin Henderson, studying Dr. Brenner’s journals, discovers that the Upside Down is not a parallel dimension. He explains it to the group:
โItโs not another world. Itโs a wormhole. A bridge between two points in time and space, between our world and anotherโ .
The other world is a hellish dimension Dustin names “the Abyss.” This is where Eleven originally banished Henry Creel as a child, and her subsequent remote contact with that place accidentally created the Upside Down bridge . The fleshy wall surrounding Hawkins and the giant sphere above the lab are made of “exotic matter,” a scientific power source holding the entire wormhole structure together .
Vecna’s ultimate plan is also laid bare. He intends to merge our world with the Abyss, using the twelve kidnapped childrenโincluding Holly Wheelerโas psychic vessels to amplify his power . He frames this act to the children as saving the world from a spreading “darkness,” comparing it to the “Black Thing” in Holly’s favorite book, A Wrinkle in Time .
The Crew’s Plan for the Final Battle
Facing an enemy who is safe in another dimension, the Hawkins team formulates a complex final strategy. Surprisingly, Steve Harrington provides a key idea. Noting that Vecna’s plan will pull the two worlds closer together, Steve suggests they wait for the Squawk radio tower to pierce through a rift in the sky. This would create a “beanstalk” for them to climb into the Abyss .
Joe Keery, who plays Steve, thought it was “fun” that his character played such a critical role. โMy character is usually an observer in these scenesโฆ but not necessarily the person whoโs coming up with the planโ .
The full plan, dubbed “Operation Beanstalk,” involves Eleven and Kali entering Vecna’s mind to attack him while Max guides them, having been inside his mind before. To permanently end the threat, Dustin proposes planting a bomb by the exotic matter to collapse the Upside Down bridge entirely as they escape .

The Lingering Threat and Finale Predictions
While Steve and the other main characters survive Volume 2, the final episode promises high stakes. The Duffer Brothers have stated that Season 5 contains “the most violent death of any season” . With no major deaths so far, many believe this will occur in the finale .
The most immediate danger involves Eleven and Kali. Kali believes the only way to stop their blood from being used to create more super-powered children is to sacrifice themselves. She proposes they stay in the Upside Down as the bridge is destroyed, vanishing along with it to ensure no one can ever use them again .
โAt the end of [Episode 7], thereโs a sense of dread or uncertainty that pervades,โ series co-creator Ross Duffer says. โThereโs a look and a moment between [Eleven] and Kali where it seems as though Eleven has agreed to Kaliโs planโฆโ .
The creators have tried to manage expectations, noting the finale will be emotional but not a wholesale slaughter of characters. Matt Duffer told The Hollywood Reporter, “Itโs not Game of Thronesโฆ Thereโs not going to be a Red Wedding situation” . When asked about fan fears for Steve specifically, Matt added, “The only way we could take it further is death” , a comment that did little to calm nerves.
The series finale, “Stranger Things 5: The Finale” (also called “The Right Side Up”), will be released on Tuesday, December 31, 2025, at 5:00 PM PT / 8:00 PM ET. It will be a super-sized episode and will also be available to watch in select movie theaters .
