Max Mayfield, played by Sadie Sink, has finally broken free from Vecna’s mind prison and awakened from her long coma in Stranger Things Season 5. Her escape with Holly Wheeler in Episode 6, “Escape from Camazotz,” was a major victory for the Hawkins crew. However, Max’s return is complicated. After more than a year trapped, her body is weak, confining her to a wheelchair and limiting her role in the final battle. Actor Sadie Sink has shared insights into her character’s challenging journey and ultimate fate.
The latest episodes, which arrived on Netflix on December 25, set the stage for the series finale on December 31. While Max is back with her friends, the fight against Vecna is far from over, and her unique knowledge of his mind could be the key to saving everyone.
Max’s Escape From Vecna’s Mind Prison
For most of the final season, Max was held captive in a dream world created from Vecna’s memories, a place she and Holly Wheeler called Camazotz. She had been stuck there for what felt like two years, resigned to a life hiding in a cave that was safe from Vecna’s direct reach. Her escape became possible only after Vecna kidnapped Holly and brought her into the same mental prison.
The turning point came when Max and Holly, while running from Vecna, discovered a traumatic memory from his childhood. They saw a young Henry Creel stumble upon an injured, frantic scientist in a cave. The man, believing Henry was sent to kill him, shot the boy. Henry then fought back and killed the scientist with a rock. Witnessing this horrible origin story gave the girls the understanding they needed to find a way out.
They followed the sound of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” โ a song Lucas had been playing for her comatose body โ which led them to a portal back to the real world. In a final moment in the red void of Vecna’s mind, Max tearfully thanked “Holly the Heroic” for saving her before they parted ways to attempt their separate escapes.

A Bittersweet Reunion and a Weakened Return
Max successfully returned to her body, opening her eyes to see her devoted boyfriend, Lucas Sinclair, at her hospital bedside. This reunion was nearly ruined, as Vecna had simultaneously sent Demogorgons to kill Max’s physical body. Lucas, along with Robin and Vickie, fought them off just in time for Max to wake up.
Her return, however, is not a full recovery. Due to the extensive time spent in a coma, Max’s body is severely weakened. While she has regained her eyesight, her muscles are too frail for her to walk. As a result, she is now using a wheelchair. This physical state means she will likely have to stay behind while the rest of the group ventures into the Upside Down for the final confrontation with Vecna.
Reflecting on the emotional hospital reunion, Sadie Sink called it one of her favorite scenes. โYou do forget about Max and Lucas, especially this season. Sheโs in a coma. Youโre not seeing them together,โ Sink said. โItโs emotional seeing them reunite and realizing, Oh my God, these two have been through so much togetherโ.
The Core of Max’s Strength and Her New Bond with Holly
In interviews, Sadie Sink explained that despite being defeated and tired in Camazotz, Max never lost her core resilience. Sink noted that Max had “accepted all of her fates,” which allowed her to be “effortlessly brave” when it mattered most. A significant part of her journey this season was her dynamic with Holly Wheeler, a character Max grew to protect and guide.
โFor Max, she really never had someone like that,โ Sink said, comparing the bond to Max’s difficult relationship with her own older brother. โFor her to offer that guidance to Holly, it was really beautiful and something Max neededโ.
Sink also found it fitting that Max was ultimately saved not by someone with superpowers like Eleven, but by a young, determined girl. โItโs really fitting, especially to see someone so young possess so much strength and resilience,โ the actor stated. โThatโs what the show has always celebrated and stood for โ young kids persevering through these huge obstacles and coming out as heroes at the endโ.
What Max’s Return Means for the Final Battle
Although her physical condition sidelines her from direct combat, Max remains a crucial asset to her friends. She is now the only person who has been deep inside Vecna’s mind and returned. Her intimate knowledge of his memories, fears, and mental landscape could provide the Hawkins group with invaluable strategic information for their attack.
The group’s plan, dubbed “Operation Beanstalk,” involves allowing Vecna to draw the other dimensionโcalled the Abyssโcloser to Hawkins. Eleven, with help from her sister Kali, will then attempt to ambush Vecna in his mind while the others fight physically. Max’s insights could be key to making this plan work.
The final episode of Stranger Things will be released on December 31 at 5:00 PM PT on Netflix.
