The box office numbers are in, and a new champion has taken the lead for 2026. Universal and Illumination’s sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, now sits at the top of the charts. The film earned a huge $629 million globally, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood release of the year so far. Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling crossed the $500 million mark, proving that space adventures still bring big crowds to theaters.

The Mario sequel shows no signs of slowing down. It collected $83.5 million from 81 international territories in its second weekend alone. The family movie now has $320 million from overseas markets and $308 million from North America.

Mario’s Second Weekend Shows Strong Box Office Power

The numbers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie stayed very strong in its second week. The film added $69 million from 4,284 theaters in the United States and Canada. That drop of 48% is considered normal for a big blockbuster release.

Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Comscore, talked about the film’s success.

“For the film to already be over $300 million is just astonishing. To get to these box office milestones is all the more impressive.”

The production budget for the movie was only $110 million. This makes its box office return very profitable for the studio. The original The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned over $353 million domestically by its second weekend in 2023. But the sequel is still a massive hit by any measure.

Mexico leads the international markets with $47.8 million. The United Kingdom and Ireland follow with $37.4 million. Germany brought in $29 million, and France added $23.9 million to the total.

Project Hail Mary Surpasses Half a Billion Dollars

Project Hail Mary may have lost the top spot, but the film still hit a major financial goal. The Ryan Gosling-led space drama now has global ticket sales above $500 million. After four weekends of release, the Amazon MGM film holds a worldwide total of $510 million.

The movie earned $254 million overseas and $256.5 million in North America. Over the past weekend, Project Hail Mary added $30.6 million from 88 international markets. The drop was only 31% from the previous weekend. That shows the film has good staying power with audiences.

The movie is an adaptation of Andy Weir’s book, the same writer who created The Martian. It tells the story of a man who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he is there. The fate of life on Earth ends up in his hands.

The Drama Brings Profit for A24 With Modest Budget

The A24 comedy The Drama continues to bring in solid numbers. The movie stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. It added $16 million from 50 overseas territories in its second weekend. The R-rated film now has $35 million internationally and $65 million globally after two weekends.

The production cost for The Drama was under $28 million. This makes the film a clear financial success for A24. The movie only needs to reach about $70 million to break even. It is very close to that goal already.

The Drama has created a lot of online talk because of its main story. The plot follows a couple whose relationship gets tested after they tell each other the worst thing they have ever done. This controversial idea has helped keep the movie in public conversations.

The film had a drop of just 38.7% from its opening weekend. That is one of the best holds among all movies currently playing. Analysts think The Drama could finish with anywhere from $110 million to $150 million globally.

First Quarter Box Office Shows Strong Recovery

The North American box office had its best first quarter in five years. Revenue hit $1.8 billion through March 31. These numbers do not even include The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which opened on April 1. The market is clearly bouncing back from past slow periods.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will face tough competition in the coming weeks. Major releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, and Avengers: Doomsday are all coming soon. The Mario sequel will have to work hard to keep its number one spot through the rest of 2026.

The original The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended 2023 with $1.3 billion globally. It was the second highest-grossing movie of that year. The sequel still has a long way to go to reach that number. But with strong weekly numbers, the $1 billion mark looks very possible in the near future.
