Bae Suzy has opened up about her acting career in a new interview with Elle Korea. The South Korean actress and singer, known for her roles in “Architecture 101,” “Anna,” and “Doona!,” spoke candidly about her evolving approach to acting, her thoughts on being called the “Nation’s First Love,” and her upcoming film and drama projects.
The interview accompanied a pictorial for the magazine’s October issue, released on September 14, 2026. In the photos, Suzy wore Celine’s 2026 winter collection, showing a range of expressions from natural everyday moments to dramatic shots under the spotlight.
Suzy on Her Face and Acting
Suzy shared that she did not always understand why people associated her with the idea of a “first love.” She explained that she later realized her ordinary and unassuming features made it easy for audiences to project emotions onto her face.
“I didn’t understand why people used to think of first love when they looked at my face. Then I was told that because my face is ordinary and unassuming, it’s easy to project the emotions from a film onto it, and I thought, ‘I guess I can contain various characters in my face.’”
She added that as time passes, she discovers new expressions and sides of her face that she did not know she had. Those moments make her happy, and she believes there are still parts of herself she has yet to discover.
Her Approach to Playing Characters
Suzy also explained how her method for portraying characters has changed over the years. Rather than focusing only on the character itself, she now thinks more about the character’s relationships with the people around them and the environment they grew up in.
“Even if it isn’t included in the script, I imagine what kind of time this character has gone through and create my own reasons and backstory for them.”
She compared the characters she has played to multiple “rooms” in her heart. She said she has both affection and regrets for every character, but as someone who values the present, she feels she has closed all those rooms well. Right now, only the room for “The Men of the Harem,” which she is currently filming, is wide open.
Upcoming Film Seven O’Clock Breakfast Club for the Brokenhearted
Suzy spoke about her upcoming film “Seven O’Clock Breakfast Club for the Brokenhearted,” which is set to release in theaters in South Korea in December 2026.
“I was very drawn to the fact that you can actually share things more honestly with strangers who have experienced similar sadness.”
The film is a romance drama based on a 2012 novel by Baek Young Ok. Suzy plays Sa Gang, a flight attendant who meets a business consultant named Ji Hoon, played by Lee Jin Uk, at a gathering for people who have recently gone through breakups. The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival last year and is directed by Im Sun Ae.
Portraits of Delusion Drama on Disney Plus
Another project Suzy discussed is the drama “Portraits of Delusion,” a mystery thriller set to premiere on Disney+ in the second half of 2026.
“The mysterious atmosphere I felt in director Han Jae Rim’s writing and the woman’s story contained within it deeply resonated with me. While playing Song Jeong Hwa, I feel like many different sides of me were captured on screen. It wasn’t an easy process, but I enjoyed it that much more and learned a lot.”
The drama is based on a webtoon and is produced as a 12-episode series. It is co-produced by Showbox and Magnum Nine. Suzy stars alongside Kim Seon Ho in this period mystery drama set in 1935 Gyeongseong.
The Men of the Harem Filming
Suzy is currently filming the Netflix original series “The Men of the Harem.” She plays Latil, the empress of the Tarium Empire, in this palace romance fantasy. The series has drawn attention for its unconventional premise, with the empress choosing men to join her harem. Actors considered for the male roles include Shin Seung Ho. The production experienced a change when Lee Soo Hyuk exited the project after filming began, with his agency citing schedule issues.

When asked about her criteria for selecting future projects, Suzy gave an honest answer.
“Honestly, I still don’t really know what my criteria are. I want to act in projects and play characters that I feel drawn to at the time. In the end, I think I trust that next ‘pull’ a lot.”
She also reflected on how she now approaches each role with more thought about the character’s full life and relationships, not just the scripted moments.
