The final season of The Boys is rolling out weekly on Prime Video, and the newly released trailer for Episode 3 brings back a familiar face. Giancarlo Esposito returns as Stan Edgar, the former Vought CEO who seemingly vanished after Season 4. His comeback arrives at a critical moment when Billy Butcher and the team need answers about the origins of Compound V. The trailer, which dropped on April 13, 2026, shows The Boys meeting with Edgar to learn about V-One, the first version of the superpower-giving formula. This information could be the key to stopping Homelander once and for all.
Episode 3 Trailer Shows The Boys Getting Help From Their Old Enemy
The promo for Episode 3, titled “Every One of You Sons of Bitches,” makes it clear that Edgar holds important secrets. Rotten Tomatoes released the official trailer, and it quickly spread across social media. The teaser shows Edgar explaining the history of V-One to Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie. This version of Compound V runs through Soldier Boy’s veins, which explains why he survived the supe-killing virus at the end of Episode 2.
Edgar was last seen in Season 4 after Homelander forced him out of Vought. His return makes sense for the final season. The character knows more about the company’s dark past than anyone else. With Homelander now controlling the government and hunting for immortality, Edgar’s knowledge becomes very valuable to Butcher’s team.
Fans reacted to the trailer with excitement across Twitter and Reddit. One user wrote, “Stan Edgar back to drop truth bombs on everyone. This final season keeps delivering.” Another commented, “Esposito always brings the perfect calm energy to this crazy show. Can’t wait for Wednesday.”
Why Stan Edgar Matters for the Final Season Story
The trailer confirms that Edgar’s return connects directly to the main story of Season 5. Homelander wants V-One because it supposedly makes a supe immortal. Soldier Boy surviving the virus in Episode 2 proves how strong this original formula really is. The showrunner Eric Kripke and the writers are using Edgar to fill in the backstory of how Vought created super-powered beings in the first place.
Esposito spoke about the final season in a 2024 interview with Deadline. He said:
“I think it’s going to be a whirlwind season. Every show that comes to an end has an explosive ending in its final season, and The Boys is just such a very outrageous show, but also reflective of the world we live in now. When superheroes have the power to not only save us, but to harm us, that’s an interesting show.”
The actor also shared a positive message about personal strength. “I love it, because I believe that we are all superheroes. I believe that inside of us all, if you’re able to think differently, will unlock a hidden power that we all have.”
Homelander Wants to Become a God in the Final Season
Antony Starr’s Homelander is not satisfied with political power anymore. The Season 5 trailer shows him wanting to reach divine status. Karl Urban, who plays Butcher, explained this goal at the Tokyo Comic-Con in December 2024.
“At the beginning of the season, Homelander’s goal is to become a god. He’s going to rule the world and the only people that can stop him are Butcher and The Boys. However, The Boys are in prison. So, first of all, we need to get the gang back together. And then, we spend the whole season trying to stop Homelander. You’re in for a crazy, wild, fun ride. Let me tell you, nobody is safe. Nobody. It’s going to be fun.”
Showrunner Eric Kripke also talked about Homelander’s mindset at a December 2024 SAG-AFTRA panel. “He’s literally all trauma. I think what he plays so beautifully about it is he wants to be a god, but he’s a man. And it’s kind of slowly, or maybe not so slowly, driving him insane.”

What Happened in Episodes 1 and 2 of Season 5
The first two episodes set up the stakes for the final season. The Season 4 finale ended with the United States under martial law. President Steven Calhoun, who works for Vought, now controls the country. The Boys are held in “freedom camps” run by the company.
Annie January (Starlight) , played by Erin Moriarty, leads a resistance effort. She manages to leak damaging footage of Homelander, but the victory does not last long. A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) finally takes a stand against Homelander. He saves Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) and pays for it with his life. Homelander kills A-Train in the first episode, ending his long journey from villain to reluctant hero.
Billy Butcher returns with a terminal health condition and a dangerous plan. He wants to release a virus that kills every supe on Earth. The second episode ends with a big surprise. Homelander wakes up Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) , who was frozen in a laboratory. Soldier Boy then survives exposure to the supe-killing virus, which changes everything for the final season.

The V-One Storyline Could Change Everything
The third episode will focus on V-One, the original Compound V formula. Soldier Boy has this version in his blood, which is why he lived through the virus. Homelander wants to get V-One for himself. If he succeeds, he becomes very hard to kill. This puts even more pressure on Butcher and The Boys to stop him before it is too late.
The trailer shows The Boys asking Edgar for weaknesses in the formula. They need to find a way to stop Homelander before he gains immortality. The final season only has five episodes left after this week, so the story is moving very fast.
Prime Video has confirmed that The Boys Season 5 is the final chapter. There will be no Season 6. The show ends with Episode 8 on May 20. Spinoffs like Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico are in development, but the main story reaches its conclusion this year.
