The legendary archer of Sherwood Forest is getting his darkest makeover yet. Hugh Jackman stars as an aged, brutal version of the folk hero in The Death of Robin Hood, and the first images reveal a bloody, weary outlaw far removed from the classic man in tights.

Director Michael Sarnoski, known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, is tossing out the “steal from the rich, give to the poor” rulebook. Instead, his movie follows a battle-scarred Robin Hood at the end of his life, a man haunted by the terrible things he did. The first look photos show Jackman with long gray hair, a wild white beard, and a face smeared with dirt and blood.

This is not a hero waiting for a parade. This is a killer waiting for death.

The Outlaw Admits He Is โ€˜Monstrousโ€™

The core twist of this adaptation is brutal honesty. The new trailer dropped in early January 2026, and it did not hold back. In the footage, Jackman’s Robin looks directly at the camera and admits, โ€œIโ€™ve killed so many, I could not give you a count. Itโ€™s a curse.โ€

Sarnoski explained that his version of the character lived long enough to see the myths grow around him. People turned a violent criminal into a folk hero. โ€œHe was this murderous outlaw who did a lot of terrible things and was kind of monstrous,โ€ the director said. โ€œBut heโ€™s lived long enough to see this folklore get created about him.โ€

The footage describes Robin introducing himself as an outlaw, not a savior. He knows the stories people tell about him are lies. One voiceover in the trailer even calls him a โ€œmurderous brigand,โ€ setting a tone that feels closer to a horror movie than a swashbuckling adventure.

Jodie Comer and Bill Skarsgรฅrd Join The Bleak World

Jackman does not walk this dark road alone. Jodie Comer plays a mysterious woman who finds Robin severely wounded after a dangerous fight. She nurses him back to health, but the trailer reveals a tense history between them.

โ€œI owe you an apology,โ€ Comer tells him. โ€œYou begged for me to let you die.โ€ Her character is not Maid Marian. Sarnoski describes her as someone who introduces Robin to โ€œanother facet of life.โ€

Bill Skarsgรฅrd also stars as a version of Little John. But this is not the happy-go-lucky sidekick. Skarsgรฅrd plays an ex-student of Robin who has become a key figure from his violent past. The first look photos include a shot of Jackman and Skarsgรฅrd sitting together in a rugged landscape, looking more like two tired criminals than legendary adventurers.
