Netflix is getting ready to close out its adaptation of Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquezโs famous novel. The streaming service announced that Part 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude will arrive in August 2026. But instead of a regular season ending, the show will finish with a special feature-length grand finale that drops weeks after the main episodes.
The first part of the series launched in December 2024. It showed the rise of the fictional town of Macondo and the early generations of the Buendรญa family. Many people in Hollywood thought this book could never be turned into a show or movie. Garcรญa Mรกrquez himself said no for decades because he believed a regular film could not hold his full story. Netflix worked with the authorโs family to finally make it happen.
Part 2 Arrives on August 5 With Seven Episodes
One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 2 will start streaming on August 5, 2026. The first release includes seven episodes that continue the story of the Buendรญa family and the town of Macondo. These episodes cover fifty years of events that have not been told yet in the series.
Here are the episode titles for Part 2:
- Episode 1: The Armistice
- Episode 2: The Queen of Madagascar
- Episode 3: Fernanda del Carpio
- Episode 4: The Innocent Train Had Arrived
- Episode 5: It was October 11
- Episode 6: More than Three Thousand of Them
- Episode 7: It Rained For Four Years, Eleven Months and Two Days
Laura Mora and Carlos Moreno share directing duties for Part 2. Mora directs episodes 1, 2, 5, and 6. Moreno takes episodes 3, 4, and 7.
Grand Finale Drops on August 26 as Standalone Movie
The biggest surprise came when Netflix revealed the ending plan. The final episode, known as the Grand Finale, will release separately on August 26, 2026. This last chapter runs like a full movie, not a regular TV episode. Netflix made this choice because the ending of the novel is too big for a standard 45-minute or hour-long episode.
Laura Mora also directs this feature-length finale. She directed several episodes in Part 1 and now takes charge of closing the whole story. The creative team spent nearly three years building the world of Macondo, making the final chapter very personal for everyone working on the show.
โEach episode of this second part is like a film. We took the series to another level aesthetically, narratively, and through sound and music to build a much more cinematic and emotional ending. After living in that house and in that town for three years, we felt that closing this journey had to feel just as grand, epic and cinematic,โ said Laura Mora.
Francisco Ramos, Netflixโs Vice President of Content for Latin America, explained why the show needed a special finale. During writing and pre-production, the team realized a normal episode would not do justice to Garcรญa Mรกrquezโs ending. So they turned the final chapter into its own feature-length film.
What Happens in Part 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude
Part 2 jumps deeper into the later generations of the Buendรญa family. The story follows the town of Macondo as it changes from a simple place into something darker. The curse that รrsula Iguarรกn spoke about starts to take full effect. New characters enter the story, including Fernanda del Carpio, who marries into the family and changes everything.
The episodes cover major moments from the book. Colonel Aureliano Buendรญa faces an assassination attempt. The railroad arrives in Macondo, bringing a banana company that slowly destroys the town. The later parts of the novel get very intense and surreal, and the show promises to show all of it.
Returning cast members include Marleyda Soto as รrsula Iguarรกn and Claudio Cataรฑo as Colonel Aureliano Buendรญa. New actors joining Part 2 include รngela Cano, Emmanuel Restrepo, Estefanรญa Piรฑeres, Marรญa Adelaida Puerta, and Emiliano Pernรญa.
Netflix Built a Real Macondo in Colombia
The production team filmed everything in Colombia. They built the town of Macondo from scratch with help from almost 900 crew members. More than 150 skilled workers and 850 local suppliers helped create the sets. The team even hired 16 botanical experts to make sure every plant on screen matched what Garcรญa Mรกrquez wrote in the book.
The first part of One Hundred Years of Solitude made it onto Netflixโs Global Top 10 for non-English series. Critics praised the show for staying true to the novel while making the story work for television. Now the second part aims to finish what the author started more than 50 years ago.
