Theo James returns as Eddie Horniman in The Gentlemen Season 2, the Netflix crime-comedy series from Guy Ritchie. The first season ended with Eddie reluctantly stepping into the criminal world after discovering a massive weed empire beneath his family estate. Season 2 takes that transformation much further. Eddie goes from a reluctant duke to a full-fledged crime player. Tragedy strikes in the penultimate episode. Bella dies in a seaplane crash while traveling to their honeymoon. Eddie is devastated. He is shown weeping at Bella’s funeral in Italy, but his grief quickly turns into rage. Eddie becomes convinced that Bella’s death was no accident. He believes someone ordered the hit. His first suspect is Bobby Glass.
Eddie returns to the UK and begins his hunt for answers. He and Geoff (Vinnie Jones) capture one of the men found transporting weapons near the estate at the time of the crash. Eddie tortures the man using a car battery to get information. The tortured man gives up Bobby’s name. But the confession comes under extreme duress. Eddie already made up his mind before the torture even started.
Eddie Tries to Kill Bobby
With Marco’s help, Eddie hires an Italian hitman to kill Bobby. Meanwhile, Susie works to protect her father. She learns that Bobby bought the £100 million debt Eddie owes to Stan (Giancarlo Esposito). Susie confronts Eddie and tells him:
“There’s a hundred million reasons why my dad wants you alive.”
Neither of them understands why Bobby made this move. But it becomes clear that Bobby did not order Bella’s death. Eddie races against time to stop the hitman. He reaches Bobby’s sauna just in time. Together, they kill the hitman. Bobby later tells Susie that he believes Bella’s death will be the turning point Eddie needs to fully take control.
The Real Killer Is Revealed
Eddie continues his search for the real killer. Geoff gets a phone number from the tortured man, but the number turns out to be fake. Eddie shoots the man dead. Then a casual dinner with Lady Sabrina (Joley Richardson) and Freddy changes everything. Freddy calls Sabrina and asks if “everyone is okay,” mentioning he has had “vivid dreams” about someone being hurt. Sabrina tells him about Bella’s death. During a later dinner, Sabrina relays Freddy’s phone call to Eddie.
Eddie’s suspicions shift to his brother Freddy Horniman (Daniel Ings). Freddy spent much of the season in a rehabilitation facility. But Eddie knows Freddy could not have pulled this off alone. Eddie believes Freddy had outside help. He suspects John “The Gospel” Dixon, the head of the Scouse crime family.

The Final Confrontation
Eddie sets a trap for John Dixon. A meeting is arranged at a warehouse near the airport. The location is technically not UK territory. Eddie and Susie ambush John and his men. Susie and Marco’s associate Vargas take out John’s henchmen. Eddie confronts John alone. John confesses that he helped Freddy kill Bella. John explains that he wanted revenge for his brother Tommy’s death, which Eddie caused in Season 1. John says:
“I’ve been doing God’s work since.”
He views Freddy as a replacement for the brother he lost. John helped Freddy claim his place in the drug empire by killing Bella. Eddie leaves John alive. But he is not done with him yet.
Eddie Forces Freddy to Commit Murder
Eddie visits Freddy at his housing facility. He confronts his brother about Bella’s death. Freddy refuses to accept any responsibility. Eddie beats Freddy badly and holds a gun to his head. The season delivers its final twist. A black van pulls up with a gagged John and one of Eddie’s men holding a chainsaw. Eddie wants Freddy to kill John. He wants Freddy to avenge Bella’s death himself.
Freddy reluctantly gets into the van. The final moments show a bloodied Freddy holding John’s severed head. Eddie looks pleased. His revenge is complete. The season ends with Eddie having turned his own brother into a killer.
What This Means for Eddie
Eddie’s transformation is now complete. He started as a military officer who wanted nothing to do with the family’s criminal empire. By the end of Season 2, he has orchestrated a brutal revenge that forced his own brother to commit murder. Eddie no longer just survives in the criminal world. He controls it. He has shown that he is willing to go to any length to get what he wants. The season leaves Eddie standing at the top. But the cost is clear. He has lost his wife and turned his brother into a killer. The man who once had a moral line now seems to have none.
