The Rookie is moving to a new night and bringing a brand-new spinoff with it. ABC announced at New York Comic Con that The Rookie Season 9 will premiere on Wednesday, January 6 at 9 p.m., immediately followed by the series debut of The Rookie: North at 10 p.m. The network also shared the first teaser footage, which shows the aftermath of the Season 8 cliffhanger that left Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen in serious danger.

The Rookie Season 9 Moves to Wednesday Nights

The Rookie is heading to a new time slot for its ninth season. This marks the eighth time period change for the long-running procedural, which started its eighth season in the Tuesday 10 p.m. slot before moving to Mondays at 10 p.m. The show will now anchor a two-hour Rookie block on Wednesdays, presumably following ABC’s comedy lineup that includes Abbott Elementary and Shifting Gears.

ABC renewed The Rookie for Season 9 in April 2026, a month before the Season 8 finale aired. This continues a trend for the series, which has premiered in January for its last three seasons. The Season 9 premiere will be a two-parter, according to announcements made at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year.

What Happened at the End of The Rookie Season 8

The Season 8 finale ended on a major cliffhanger. Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) proposed to Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) on the beach, and she said yes. Moments later, the newly engaged couple was drugged and kidnapped by two people seeking revenge for an international crime boss the team had taken down earlier in the episode.

“Tim and Lucy are engaged! But it was immediately followed by them being drugged and kidnapped.”

The cast actually filmed an alternate ending for Season 8 in case the show was not renewed. Eric Winter revealed that the cast shot a different conclusion as a precaution. The cliffhanger made it to air, and Season 9 will pick up right where things left off.

First Teaser Shows the Rescue Mission

The teaser shown at New York Comic Con gives fans a look at what is coming. The footage shows John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and the team attempting to rescue Tim and Lucy after their kidnapping. Tim is shown being tortured during the dangerous rescue operation.

The Rookie: North Introduces Alex Holland

The Rookie: North is the second spinoff of the franchise, following The Rookie: Feds. The new series stars Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, Insecure) as Alex Holland, a middle-aged man whose life takes a major turn after a violent home invasion.

“North introduces Alex Holland, a man who battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as a rookie after a violent home invasion.”

The show is set in Pierce County, Washington, a location that offers a different backdrop from the original series. Alex Holland must prove to his skeptical training officer, his fellow rookies, and himself that he has finally found something worth fighting for.

Jay Ellis leads the cast, which also includes Janet Montgomery as Charlotte Dru (Holland’s training officer), Karen Fukuhara as Leah Mizuno, Chris Sullivan as Sergeant Nix, Froy Gutierrez as Odell Chance, Mya Lowe as Elora Howe, and Malik Watson as Mark Lewis.

Alexi Hawley, creator of The Rookie, serves as executive producer and writer for the spinoff. Nathan Fillion, Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross, and Michelle Chapman also executive produce, with Jay Ellis as a producer.

Crossovers Bring Fan-Favorite Characters to the Spinoff

Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, and Eric Winter will all make crossover appearances on The Rookie: North. Fillion appears in the pilot, and Hawley confirmed that O’Neil and Winter will also head up to the Washington-set series during the season.

“So obviously you see Nathan might be in the pilot, but then we might also bring a couple of other people up during the course of the season.”

The crossovers are designed to help launch the new spinoff while allowing for seamless storytelling between the two shows.
