The third season of Interview With the Vampire, which aired under the new title The Vampire Lestat, wrapped up on July 19, 2026 with a finale that left viewers with more questions than answers. The episode titled “The Failures” delivered a bloody ending that has everyone talking about what comes next for Lestat, Louis, and the entire vampire world.
The finale picked up right after the shocking events of Episode 6, where Lestat (Sam Reid) and Louis (Jacob Anderson) lost their heads in a park ambush. Armand (Assad Zaman) and Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) were behind the attack, separating the two vampires from their bodies. This set the stage for an episode that was less about action and more about reflection.
Lestat Faces His Past While Headless
Most of “The Failures” followed Lestat’s head as it sat inside a bowling bag owned by Daniel Molloy. During this time, Lestat experienced what could be called a death dream. He faced the ghosts of his past, including his maker Magnus (Damien Atkins) and the many people he turned into vampires over the centuries.
The episode showed Lestat at a long dining table surrounded by his fledglings: Louis, his mother Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle), Nicki (Joseph Potter), Antoinette (Maura Grace Athari), TC (Sarah Swire), and an empty seat for Claudia. They questioned him about his failures and the hurt he had caused throughout his long life.
Showrunner Rolin Jones explained that this structure was planned from the very beginning. The surreal table scene allowed Lestat to finally face the consequences of his actions in a way he had always avoided.
Louis Gets His Own Reckoning
While Lestat dealt with his past, Louis faced a different kind of punishment. Armand forced Louis’ decapitated head to listen to an apology and demanded that Louis write one of his own. This strange and somewhat funny scene showed just how twisted the relationship between Louis and Armand had become.
Sam Reid, who plays Lestat, spoke about what this moment meant for his character. He said Lestat has always brushed off trauma and kept moving forward without dealing with his issues. The finale forced him to stop and actually look at what he had done.
“He persistently and adamantly rises from the ashes all the time, brushes off the trauma and keeps going… I’m trying to explain to whoever’s listening to this recording, this is what it felt like for me. This is what it’s like when you completely and utterly ignore all of the failures and all of the issues that you have in your life.”
Lestat and Louis Finally Reunite
By the end of the episode, both Lestat and Louis were put back together. The Talamasca, a secret organization that watches over supernatural beings, convinced Daniel and Alex to give up Lestat’s head. This allowed Lestat to perform his final concert for an audience of vampires.
The reunion between Lestat and Louis was not romantic in the traditional sense. They shared a tender moment where they touched each other’s necks, but there was no kiss. Reid explained that this made sense given what they had just gone through.
“They’ve both just had near-death experiences, and they’re on a bus full of people who feel animosity toward them. I don’t think what you would be doing at that point in time is making out on the sofa… The most important part of their relationship arc in this season is that Lestat has learned that Louis does love him.”
The Final Shot Changes Everything
The last moments of the finale showed Lestat looking out over the city of Montreal from his balcony. The city was completely destroyed. This image confirmed that something terrible happened after Lestat’s concert, and it likely involved Akasha (Sheila Atim), the mother of all vampires.
Jones teased that this destruction was caused by Akasha waking up from her long sleep. In Anne Rice’s books, Akasha is the original vampire who has been kept in a forced slumber for thousands of years. Lestat’s music, broadcast during his rock tour, woke her up.
What Akasha Wants
Akasha has a terrifying plan. She believes that male violence is the root of all human suffering. Her goal is to eliminate 90% of the male population to create a world ruled by women. This is not about helping women but about expressing her ancient anger.
“There’s not anything level-headed that’s coming. There’s something quite Old Testament that’s coming, the feminine version of it.”
Sheila Atim described Akasha as both a creator and destroyer. She compared the character to a parent who says, “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out of it”.
Will There Be a Season 4?
As of July 21, 2026, AMC has not officially renewed Interview With the Vampire for Season 4. However, the signs point toward a renewal happening soon.
Dan McDermott, president of AMC Studios, told The Ankler that the show has performed incredibly well. He said the series exceeded its 30-day performance estimate in just seven days and doubled it within the first 20 days.
McDermott also confirmed that AMC is discussing continuing the story for at least two more seasons. He mentioned that The Queen of the Damned and The Tale of the Body Thief are natural next books to adapt.
Jones has already planned out potential Seasons 4 and 5. He started working on these ideas with executive producer Hannah Moscovitch while filming Season 2 in Prague.
“The design for a potential Season 4 and a potential Season 5 started pretty deep into the shooting of Season 2 with me and Hannah walking around Prague, just talking… about, how would we do it?”
Season 4 Will Adapt Queen of the Damned
If the show returns, Season 4 will likely adapt Anne Rice’s third book, The Queen of the Damned. This book deals with what happens after Lestat’s concert and the destruction of Montreal.
Jones compared the structure of Queen of the Damned to what fans can expect. The book uses strict point-of-view chapters from different characters. Jones said this approach will help explain everything that happened during Season 3.
“It’s not just the concert. There’s a lot of stuff to revisit. And if you know Queen of the Damned really well, it is a series of chapters of strict point of views… This is part two.”
The Title May Change Again
The show has already changed its title once, from Interview With the Vampire to The Vampire Lestat for Season 3. Executive producer Mark Johnson said the title could change again if the show continues.
Johnson explained that the creative team is drawing from multiple books, not just one or two at a time. He said he does not know yet what a potential Season 4 would be called.
What the Cast Has Said
Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis, spoke about his character’s journey throughout the series. He discussed Louis’ relationships with Lestat, Armand, and others.
Reid talked about the closure that Lestat and Louis found in the finale. He believes they can now move forward in a way they never could before. Lestat no longer needs Louis to say “I love you” because he finally understands why Louis has trouble saying those words.
“Lestat has had the opportunity to reexamine why Louis has withheld that and to understand him better and love him even more for it… Lestat probably no longer needs that validation.”

What Happened to the Great Conversion?
The season had been building toward the Great Conversion, Lestat’s plan to spread vampirism across the world through his music. However, the finale did not show this event. Instead, it focused on Lestat and Louis confronting their pasts.
The actual Great Conversion and Akasha’s full awakening will have to wait for Season 4. Jones has described the current season as the first half of a two-part story. This means fans will need to wait for the second half to see how everything connects.
The Show’s Success
Interview With the Vampire has become a major success for AMC. The series modernized Anne Rice’s famous book about the twisted history of vampires Lestat and Louis. It has helped build what AMC calls the “Immortal Universe,” which also includes other shows based on Rice’s work.
The show’s strong performance makes a Season 4 renewal very likely. Jones has previously said he envisions the series running for five to seven seasons.
