ABC’s 9-1-1 wrapped its volcano arc with an episode that put two of its longest-running characters in direct conflict with each other’s choices. Season 10, Episode 3, “Streets of Fire,” aired on Thursday, October 29, 2026, and closed the “Lava Land” emergency that had been building since the premiere. The hour split its attention between Maddie Han making a city-saving call that nearly killed Athena Grant, and Buck and Eddie trading harsh words over how to raise Theo. The episode ended with the lava stopped, Athena alive, and Maddie quietly returned to her old dispatcher desk.
The Lava Is Headed Straight for a Packed Hospital
The crisis picked up with the lava still flowing through downtown Los Angeles. The 118 and other first responders spent the early part of the hour evacuating buildings in the lava’s path, including a college dorm where Chimney refused to send anyone else inside and handled the rescue of a trapped young woman himself. Volcanic fog, or “vog,” forced the team to shut off their hoses because the chemical-filled air was causing burns.
The bigger problem arrived when Maddie warned that the lava was now moving toward Presbyterian Hospital, which was packed with patients and had already absorbed patients from another hospital that the lava had destroyed. Moving the people was not an option because there was nowhere to take them. Maddie’s solution was to move the lava instead.
Maddie Moves the Lava, and Athena Pays the Price
Maddie directed the LAFD and LAPD to steer the lava toward an empty underground metro station using rails, checkpoints, and a controlled detonation from the bomb squad. The plan worked. The hospital was saved. The lava rolled down Sixth Street exactly as planned.
The plan also sent a river of molten rock directly toward Athena, who was trapped underground with two city workers: Matthew Sparks and Harvey. Maddie had no way of knowing Athena was down there. The irony became the engine of the entire hour: Maddie saved a hospital full of strangers while unknowingly aiming a disaster at one of her own people.
“She didn’t know she was essentially dumping the lava on Athena’s head.” โ TV Fanatic review of “Streets of Fire”
Athena, Sparks, and Harvey Fight Their Way Out
Underground, the situation looked hopeless. Matthew Sparks tried to cross a molten gap and appeared to fall to his death, but he survived after landing on debris. He found a ladder long enough to bridge the gaps and built a makeshift path across the lava.
Athena crossed first to show Harvey it could be done. Harvey froze halfway through when his memory lapsed, and Athena and Matthew talked him across by invoking his late wife. They reached an emergency landline, but it was dead.
Harvey’s failing memory still came through. He recalled details from his old job at a phone company and managed to connect Athena to a call center, which let her reach Maddie and tell her exactly where they were stuck. The 118 cut a route down through the Garnet district to a former speakeasy that now operates as a car dealership, pulling the trio out just before another burst of lava reached the tunnel.
Sparks Apologizes Before His Surgery
Matthew Sparks had been carrying guilt from his past as a police officer. His earlier fall had caused internal bleeding, and before collapsing, he asked Athena to tell Martha, the woman he shot, that he was sorry.
Athena refused. She told him he would have to say it himself. He survived surgery, and Athena left his hospital room just as Martha arrived so the two of them could speak in person.
Maddie Gets Blamed, Then Gets Demoted
The lava stopped, but the political fallout started immediately. Sue returned to dispatch with word that her supervisors were angry. They believed Maddie’s decision had endangered a poorer neighborhood while resources were directed toward an affluent area.
Maddie insisted her choice was based on location, not the status of the neighborhoods. Sue said the supervisors wanted a scapegoat and had asked her to fire Maddie. Sue refused to go along with it and said she would only return to the call center if Maddie got her old job back.
The episode ended with Maddie back in her dispatcher role. As TV Fanatic noted, the demotion was not a punishment Maddie resisted. She had been carrying the weight of emergency management and struggling with it. The show framed the return as a quiet resolution rather than a defeat.
Buck and Eddie Argue Over Theo
The personal conflict of the episode belonged to Buck and Eddie. Eddie arrived at Buck’s house after the shift to find Buck playing a game called Lava Bomb with Theo, the young boy Buck has been caring for.
Eddie told Buck that fear is a reasonable response to a disaster and that Buck should let Theo talk about what scares him instead of turning the volcano into a game. Buck pushed back, saying Theo deserved some jokes after losing both his parents. Eddie pointed out that Buck was letting broken windows, broken noses, and unplugged fridges slide, which was not helping Theo.
“I know. I know that because I’ve been with you through most of them. Did I ever one time look down at you for those mistakes? No, I didn’t because I’m your friend.” โ Buck to Eddie
Eddie replied that he was speaking as Buck’s friend and that he was worried. He walked out shortly after. Fangirlish described the scene as “primetime angst” and noted that both men had a point: Buck wants Theo to have a safe space, while Eddie believes Theo needs a parent, not just a friend.
Fan Reaction: Buddie Angst and Maddie Sympathy
Viewers on Tumblr treated the Buck and Eddie argument as the main event of the night. One post read, “IM SHAKING!!! BUDDIE ANGST BUDDIE ANGST IM SO HAPPY”. Another user wrote, “Buddie divorce!!! I’m giggling!!” and later added, “Omg!!! This episode is so good!! This opening emergency is in my top 3 and can we talk about the buddie tension at the end?!?”.
Maddie’s demotion drew a different kind of response. TV Fanatic wrote that Maddie’s panic on the phone with Chimney was “the realest moment of this whole hour,” describing her fear that everyone was looking to her for answers she did not have. Fangirlish noted that Maddie got blamed for the outcome even though she stepped up when no one else wanted the responsibility.
