The popular Starz show Outlander is heading toward its series finale, but a surprising twist has many viewers scratching their heads. With only two episodes left in the entire series, the writers introduced a new time traveler to the story. This late reveal has sparked strong reactions from the show’s dedicated fanbase, who are worried the final moments will feel rushed.

Outlander Season 8 Episode 8, titled “In the Forest,” strongly hinted that Fanny is actually a time traveler. Fanny is the sister of Jane and is believed to be Claire and Jamie Fraser’s long-lost granddaughter. The twist happened when Fanny went to a memorial site for her sister. She picked up a gemstone from a nearby lake, which burned her skin. Her ears then filled with the iconic buzzing sound that time travelers hear when near the stones.

For a show that built its entire world carefully around the rules of time travel, dropping a bomb like this at the very end feels risky. A Reddit user summed up the frustration with the pacing: “So much precious time wasted on Fanny being worried about Jane’s eternal fate. And Roger’s ceremony. We wanted to see William, more of Bree’s weapons. More of Ian’s son. But no, let’s waste half an episode on Fanny’s anger at God”.

Why the Fanny Twist Is Causing a Backlash

Fans are not just confused; they are genuinely upset about the timing. The reveal took up a large chunk of the episode’s runtime, which many feel should have been dedicated to the main couple. One viewer online expressed disappointment that Claire Fraser barely had any screen time. They wrote, “Sorry where tf is my girl Claire? Another week of being bummed by her lack of screen time and development”.

Others feel the storyline adds unnecessary complications to a plot that already had too many loose ends. A fan strongly criticized the twist, stating: “I could not roll my eyes hard enough at that bit of news about Fanny. Honestly, I don’t like anything about the Faith storyline and this is just another thing to overwhelm Fanny with”.

There is also a belief that the show missed an opportunity. Some viewers suggested that if the writers wanted to introduce another traveler, they should have linked Fanny to Claire’s brother. One Reddit user noted: “As many of us have said, she could have been a descendant of Claire’s brother. That’s what Jane’s story could have alluded to. It could have been such an interesting twist”.

The Faith Fraser Storyline Already Divided Fans

The confusion surrounding Fanny is not entirely new. The final season has been controversial from the start because it changed a major event from the books. The show revealed that Faith Fraser, the daughter Claire lost in Season 2, might have actually survived and grown up to be the mother of Jane and Fanny. This created the “Faith Pocock” storyline.

Since author Diana Gabaldon has not written this in her books yet, many loyal readers felt betrayed. One fan tweeted about the premiere: “The Faith thing is rubbing us all the wrong way”. Another viewer felt the change “cheapened the significance of the loss of a child” that was so powerfully portrayed in Season 2.

Caitriona Balfe (Claire) and Sam Heughan (Jamie) admitted they were also surprised by the scripts. Balfe told news.com.au that they were getting the story “script by script”. Heughan added that finding out Faith might have lived was “a huge surprise” even for them.

Release Schedule for the Final Episodes

The show is currently on a short break. Outlander Season 8 Episode 9, titled “Pharos,” will air on Friday, May 8 on Starz in the USA. For viewers in the UK, it will be available on Saturday, May 9 on MGM+ via Prime Video.

The series finale, Episode 10 titled “And the World Was All Around Us,” is scheduled for Friday, May 15 on Starz in the US and Saturday, May 16 in the UK. Fans will finally see how Jamie and Claire’s journey ends. Whether the show can satisfyingly resolve the new time traveler mystery in just two episodes remains the biggest question. Currently, Outlander Season 8 is also streaming on BINGE.
