The HBO Max series Hacks delivered one of its most talked-about episodes when legendary comedian Deborah Vance had a surprising romantic encounter. Season 2 Episode 6, titled “The Click,” first aired on May 26, 2022. The episode runs for 34 minutes and was directed by series co-creator Paul W. Downs.
The story follows Deborah as she struggles to find the missing spark in her new comedy material. A night out in Memphis with her team leads to an unexpected connection with a much younger man. This brief romance helps Deborah figure out exactly what her stand-up act needs.
Meet The Main Cast Of ‘The Click’
Jean Smart Brings Deborah Vance To Life
Jean Smart, a 7-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, plays the lead role of Deborah Vance. Smart has won two consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Hacks. Her character is a successful Las Vegas comedian who has learned to be tough and independent after decades in the entertainment business.
In this episode, Deborah shows a softer side when she connects with a stranger. The encounter gives her a new perspective on her comedy. She realizes that making fun of her own flaws connects better with audiences than her usual material.
Hannah Einbinder As Ava Daniels
Hannah Einbinder, a four-time Golden Globe nominee, plays Ava Daniels. She is the young comedy writer working for Deborah. In Episode 6, Ava deals with her own family drama. Her mother Nina, played by Jane Adams, shows up unexpectedly during the tour. Ava discovers that her mother has gotten involved in a pyramid scheme, which creates tension between them.
The Supporting Cast That Makes The Episode Work
Carl Clemons-Hopkins returns as Marcus, Deborah’s business manager and most trusted employee. He keeps her career running smoothly behind the scenes. Rose Abdoo plays Josefina, Deborah’s estate manager who has been with her for years. Mark Indelicato plays Damien, Deborah’s energetic personal assistant. Megan Stalter plays Kayla Schaeffer, the unpredictable assistant to Deborah’s agent.
Poppy Liu appears as Kiki, a member of the tour crew who joins the girls’ night out. Christopher McDonald plays Marty Ghilain, the casino owner who books Deborah’s shows. Kaitlin Olson plays DJ, Deborah’s daughter. Johnny Sibilly plays Wilson, Marcus’s love interest.
90s Heartthrob Devon Sawa Joins As Jason
The biggest surprise in Episode 6 is Devon Sawa playing Jason. Sawa became famous in the 1990s for roles in Casper, Final Destination, and Idle Hands. In Hacks, he plays a FedEx employee who meets Deborah at a bar in Memphis. He has no idea she is a famous comedian. He simply finds her attractive and wants to spend a fun night together.
The casting process for Jason was special because Jean Smart helped choose her scene partner. Given the intimate nature of the episode, the show’s creators wanted Smart to have input. She watched several auditions and picked Sawa as her top choice. The actor later said Smart made him feel comfortable and welcome on set, even though he was nervous about joining such an award-winning show.
Sawa was initially worried about taking the role. He thought playing a love interest might feel like a step backward. But after reading the script, he realized the show was one of the best comedies on television and agreed to join.

When Deborah returns the next morning, everything clicks into place. She realizes her new act needs to focus on her own flaws and mistakes instead of making fun of others. She and Ava rewrite the show together. The new material works well with audiences as the tour continues.
