What Is ‘Josephine’ About?

Josephine follows an eight-year-old girl who witnesses a violent crime while jogging with her father in a park. The film tracks how the family breaks apart and slowly rebuilds as the parents struggle with trauma and the American legal system. Mason Reeves, a newcomer discovered at a San Francisco farmers market, plays the title role. Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan play her parents, Damien and Claire. How the Film Performed at Sundance and Berlin

Josephine made its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. This was the final edition of the festival held in Utah before it permanently moves to Colorado. The film won both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic. It became one of the festival’s biggest hits despite its difficult subject matter.

After Sundance, the film had its European premiere in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). In the United States, Sumerian Pictures bought the film for a seven-figure sum. The company has promised a major theatrical release and an awards campaign.

What Critics Are Saying

The film has received strong reviews from critics. Variety called it “the standout of this year’s Sundance Film Festival competition, in terms of both audacity of subject and maturity of execution.” The review praised how the movie handles adult situations through the eyes of a child.

Slant Magazine described it as “a harrowing chronicle of a premature maturation.” The review highlighted how the film stays focused on how the young girl processes what she saw. Critics have also praised Channing Tatum’s performance, with many saying it shows a new side of the actor. Variety noted that Tatum gives “a complex performance the likes of which he’s never been asked to give.”

The India Distribution Deal

Fragrant Nature Film Creations, a Kochi-based production and distribution company, closed the deal during the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival. The transaction was negotiated by the company’s head of film acquisitions Riya Rajiv and sales coordinator Sidharth S. Nair. On the seller’s side, Flavien Eripret of French sales company Goodfellas handled the deal.

This marks the first Hollywood acquisition for Fragrant Nature Film Creations. The company previously picked up the 2025 French animated feature Little Amรฉlie or the Character of Rain, which later received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. Fragrant Nature first established itself with Blessy’s 2011 Malayalam romantic drama Pranayam, starring Mohanlal.

Anne Sajeev, managing director and producer at Fragrant Nature Film Creations, explained why the company chose this film.

Josephine resonated with us because it is, above all, a deeply human story. What stayed with me long after watching the film was its emotional honesty, its compassion, and the quiet strength at its core. We were drawn to it not because of where it comes from, but because of the universality of its message. While rooted in a specific experience, its themes of vulnerability, resilience, and hope feel deeply familiar, no matter where in the world you come from. As our first Hollywood acquisition, Josephine marks an important milestone for Fragrant Nature Film Creations.”

When and Where to Watch ‘Josephine’

Fragrant Nature Film Creations plans a theatrical release across all seven territories after the film’s U.S. domestic release window closes. The company also intends to take Josephine through a run of major Indian film festivals before the wide rollout. Exact release dates have not been announced yet. The company is currently in post-production on Half, a Malayalam-language vampire action feature starring Ranjith Sajeev, Aiswarya Raj, and Amala Paul.
