Downtown Heads to North America and Germany
The Dutch drama Downtown tells a story that moves between the 1980s and today. The movie follows three young gay men who find each other in Amsterdam’s nightclub scene. Their bond grows strong on the dance floor. But things change when regulars start to disappear from their local spot. The film shows how the AIDS epidemic slowly enters their world of freedom and fun.
Dark Star Pictures bought the rights for North America. Salzgeber will release the film in Germany and Austria. The movie will have its world premiere at Frameline soon.
The film features well-known Dutch actors. Yorick van Wageningen, Hans Kesting, and Roeland Fernhout lead the cast. Maarten Swart of Kaap Holland Film produced the movie. Michiel van Erp and Monique Busman of Het Familiedrama also produced.
Michael Repsch from Dark Star Pictures shared his thoughts.
“Downtown is the rare kind of story that feels both deeply personal and broadly accessible at the same time. Director Michiel van Erp has done a masterful job crafting a film that will stay with audiences long after the credits will roll.”
Salzgeber is known for bringing LGBTQ+ cinema to German audiences. The company recently released Enzo, Love Me Tender in theaters. They also have Drunken Noodles coming soon. Both companies have worked with M-Appeal before on other movies like Baby by Marcelo Caetano.
The Garden We Dreamed Finds Buyers in Europe and Asia
The Garden We Dreamed comes from Mexican director Joaquรญn del Paso. The movie had its world premiere in Berlinale Panorama. It tells the story of Esther and Junior, a Haitian couple traveling north through Mexico. They have Esther’s two daughters with them. The family looks for a better future in a remote forest. But illegal logging and organized crime surround them. The family tries to keep hope alive in a dangerous world.
The film has sold to Arsenal for Germany and Austria. Falcon Pictures picked it up for Indonesia. Dexin Film bought rights for Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Kosovo.
Falcon Pictures has bought 12 Cannes Competition titles. These include this year’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord by Cristian Mungiu. They also picked up Minotaur by Andrey Zvyagintsev, Coward by Lukas Dhont, and All of a Sudden by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Pedro Almodรณvar’s Bitter Christmas and Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved are also on their list.
Stefan Paul, CEO of Arsenal Filmverleih, spoke about the film.
“For us, this is a powerful film that we believe will speak directly to German cinemagoers, emotional, engaging, and highly accessible. It combines strong storytelling with striking cinematography, creating an experience that is both gripping and deeply moving. We were truly on the edge of our seats.”
Truly Naked Expands Global Reach After Berlinale Success
Truly Naked is the debut feature from Dutch director Muriel d’Ansembourg. The film had its world premiere in Berlinale Perspectives. It continues to sell well across the world.
The story takes place in the UK. It follows Alec, a quiet teenage boy. His father runs an adult entertainment business. Alec helps his dad film scenes at home. He learns about physical relationships only through the camera lens. When the family moves to a small coastal town, Alec meets Nina. She challenges everything he thinks he knows about closeness and trust.
The movie takes a direct look at its subject matter. It does not hide what the father’s business involves. There are explicit scenes in the film. But the director focuses on the emotional damage and confusion Alec feels. The film asks questions about how young people learn about desire today. It shows the gap between online adult content and real human connection.
