The low-budget horror movie Obsession has become the biggest surprise of 2026. Made for just $750,000, the film has now earned over $234 million worldwide. Distributor Focus Features originally planned to send the movie to digital platforms on June 2, 2026. But the film kept making more money every week instead of slowing down. So the studio decided to delay the streaming release and let theaters keep showing it. Fans who want to watch from home will have to wait at least a few more weeks.

Streaming Date Pushed Back as Box Office Keeps Growing

Obsession opened in US theaters on May 15, 2026 with $17 million. Most horror movies drop hard in their second week. But this one did the opposite. It went up 39% in its second weekend and another 10% in its third weekend. The last movie to do this was Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial back in 1982.

The film’s fourth weekend was even more surprising. It only dropped 7% and made $25.6 million. This broke records held by The Blair Witch Project from 1999. No horror movie in history has held this well for four weekends.

Because of this success, Focus Features canceled the planned June 2 digital release . On the day it was supposed to start streaming, the movie actually made $5.7 million in theaters alone.

New Streaming Date Expected Around Late June

There are different reports about when Obsession will finally come to streaming. Some sources say June 29 , while others point to June 25 . The studio has not made an official announcement yet.

Amazon Prime Video has the streaming rights for the film . After that, it will likely go to Peacock since Focus Features is owned by Universal. An earlier report also suggested the film could hit Netflix at a later date.

The film is also expected to come to physical media. Blu-ray.com lists a July 14, 2026 release date for DVD and Blu-ray.

The Story Behind the Horror Hit

Obsession follows Bear, a lonely music store employee played by Michael Johnston. He has a secret crush on his coworker Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. After his cat dies, Bear buys a strange object called the “One Wish Willow.” The object is said to grant one wish when broken.

Bear wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else. The wish works, but not in a good way. Nikki becomes obsessed with Bear. Her love turns violent and dangerous. Bear learns that the curse will only end if one of them dies.

The film also stars Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, and Haley Fitzgerald . Curry Barker wrote, edited, and directed the movie. Before this, Barker was known for the horror short The Chair and the found-footage film Milk & Serial, which he posted for free on YouTube.

Record-Breaking Box Office Numbers

As of June 11, 2026, Obsession has earned $161 million in the US and Canada. Worldwide, the total is $234.5 million . This makes it the highest-grossing film in Focus Features history. It beat Downton Abbey ($193 million), Nosferatu ($181 million), and Darkest Hour ($150 million).

The film has also done very well in India. It earned nearly Rs 47 crore in its first 13 days after releasing on May 29. Its second weekend in India went up 125% , which is almost unheard of for a Hollywood horror film.

Focus Features bought the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival for about $15 million. That deal now looks like one of the smartest investments in recent studio history.

Why the Delay Is Actually Good News

Most movies go to streaming within a few weeks of their theatrical release. Universal Pictures has a standard 17-day window for smaller films. But Obsession performed so well that the studio decided to treat it like a major blockbuster. It will now likely get a 45-day theatrical window.

For fans who want to watch at home, the wait is frustrating. But for the filmmakers and the studio, every extra week in theaters means more money. And for people who enjoy seeing horror movies with a crowd, there is still time to catch Obsession on the big screen.
