Netflix is adding five new documentaries to its library in August 2026. The lineup covers a wide range of topics including sports, true crime, corporate scandals, and even fast food. Whether you like football, financial fraud, or investigative stories, there is something for everyone this month.
The streaming platform has built a strong reputation for documentary filmmaking with titles like The Social Dilemma, Love on the Spectrum, and To Kill a Tiger. August continues that tradition with fresh stories from around the world.
Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy Arrives August 5
Comedian Mo Gilligan hosts this documentary that looks into the global fried chicken industry. The film, directed by Liana Stewart, follows Gilligan as he travels from South London to the United States to learn about the origins of fried chicken.
In a bold experiment, Gilligan eats fried chicken three times a day for 28 days straight. The documentary explores the health effects of eating so much fried food and looks at how the industry operates on a large scale.
The film also examines the social and economic forces that drive mass consumption of fried chicken. As a Black British comedian, Gilligan addresses negative stereotypes connected to the dish and looks at how it has been culturally appropriated.
“I thought I knew chicken. Turns out, I knew nowhere near enough. From South London to the US, I wanted to understand where our obsession with fried chicken comes from, who profits from it, what it means for our health and the planet, and why this one food carries so much history.”
Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy is produced by Louis Theroux’s company Mindhouse. The 96-minute special releases globally on August 5, 2026.
Inside the Trustor Scandal Covers $53 Million Fraud
Also arriving on August 5, 2026, Inside the Trustor Scandal revisits one of Sweden’s biggest financial crimes. The documentary looks at the 1997 Trustor affair, where a group of five investors led by Joachim Posener illegally bought the investment company Trustor AB.
The group emptied the company’s bank accounts of around 600 million Swedish kronor, which equals about $53 million. Posener vanished after the crime and spent nearly three decades as one of Europe’s most wanted fugitives.
The film includes exclusive interviews with Posener and other key figures involved in the scandal. It also covers how the group used Trustor’s own money to finance the purchase of the company.
Sweden’s statute of limitations expired before Posener could be brought to trial. In an unexpected turn, he was arrested during the documentary’s production in 2026 for filming inside a high-security prison without permission.
Mourinho Documentary Series Premieres August 11
Football fans have something to look forward to on August 11, 2026, with the release of MOURINHO, a three-part documentary series about the famous football manager José Mourinho.
The series was filmed over two years and gives exclusive access to Mourinho himself. It covers his rise from winning the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004 to managing some of the biggest clubs in the world including Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid.
Mourinho has won league titles in four different countries and lifted the Champions League twice. The documentary includes interviews with many football legends such as Sir Alex Ferguson, John Terry, Iker Casillas, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Didier Drogba, Marcelo, Samuel Eto’o, Javier Zanetti, Frank Lampard, and Petr Cech.
The series comes from producer John Battsek, who worked on the BECKHAM documentary, and director Joe Pearlman, who is BAFTA and Emmy-nominated.
The trailer shows Mourinho in his office surrounded by football memorabilia. He shows off boots dedicated to him by Diego Maradona and a jersey from Cristiano Ronaldo’s first professional season.
“No career in football has generated more masterstrokes, headlines or contradictions.”
Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing Drops August 19
On August 19, 2026, Netflix releases Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, a follow-up to the platform’s earlier documentary Downfall: The Case Against Boeing from 2022.
The documentary looks at Boeing’s safety problems after two fatal crashes of the 737 MAX aircraft. Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed because of a flawed automated flight system called MCAS. These crashes killed 346 people.
The film covers the death of whistleblower John Barnett, who worked at Boeing for over three decades as a quality manager. It also includes testimonies from other whistleblowers who say the company put profits ahead of quality and safety.
Director Rory Kennedy argues in the film that Boeing has not fixed its safety problems. The documentary examines how a company trusted by millions of passengers faced serious questions about safety and corporate culture.
