All tracks from the album entered major Korean music charts including Melon and Bugs. On Melon’s Hot 100, “Surfin’ Boy” secured the No. 2 position, while another track “Hot Girls Cold Vibe” landed at No. 16.

Behind the Music: A New Sound for Summer
“Surfin’ Boy” presents a fresh sound for Red Velvet. The dance track combines bossa nova guitar, relaxed reggae rhythms, and sleek house grooves. This marks a departure from their previous high-energy summer songs like “Red Flavor” and “Power Up.”
Member Joy wrote the lyrics for the title track. She also contributed lyrics to the B-side track “Hawaii”. The album’s production involved hitmaker KENZIE, who worked on Red Velvet’s previous hits including “Red Flavor,” “Psycho,” and “Peek-A-Boo”.
The group described the new sound as capturing a more mature and sophisticated summer vibe.
“Red Velvet’s summer songs so far have often been powerful and energetic, but this time we wanted to capture a more velvet-like summer mood to match the album title. It feels less like the scorching heat of midday summer and more like watching the sunset over a beach.”
Music Video and Visual Concept
The music video for “Surfin’ Boy” received attention for its creative storytelling. The visual reinterprets themes of sirens and the frog prince, blending reality and imagination. The group filmed the music video and teaser images in Jeju Island.
Leader Irene shared a memorable moment from the shoot:
“We filmed in Jeju Island, and it rained. We were supposed to shoot the mermaid outfits when it wasn’t raining, but the rain kept coming, so we had to rush back to get the luggage we had left at the lodging. I vividly remember running back into the lodging with my hair and makeup still on and even the mermaid ears still attached.”
Fan Reactions and Social Media Buzz
Fans responded positively to the new release. Many praised the group’s vocals and the song’s unique sound.
Korean netizens shared their thoughts online:
“It has a bossa nova feeling too, and it’s unbelievably good.”
“Wow, the song is so good. … This one has a high-quality, dreamy feeling while still being easy to listen to. More than anything, I think Red Velvet’s strong vocals are what elevate the quality of their songs.”
Listeners noted that “Surfin’ Boy” feels like a song only Red Velvet could deliver. The group’s ability to create a distinct summer atmosphere while maintaining their signature style drew widespread appreciation.
Physical Album Sales and Commercial Success
According to Hanteo Chart data, “Velvet Summer” recorded 66,667 copies sold on its first day of release. This number reflects the strong demand for the group’s music after their extended hiatus.
