The star of FX’s new thriller series The Shards made a surprising confession about his preparation for the role. Igby Rigney, who plays a fictionalized version of author Bret Easton Ellis in the Ryan Murphy-produced show, never actually met the writer during production. Rigney believes that choice actually worked in his favor.
The series, which premiered on August 5, 2026, on FX and Hulu, is based on Ellis’ 2023 autofiction novel. It follows a 17-year-old version of the American Psycho author during his senior year at an elite Los Angeles prep school in 1981. Why Rigney Never Met the Real Bret Easton Ellis
In interviews leading up to the premiere, Rigney revealed that he never had the chance to sit down with Ellis while preparing for the role. The actor, known for his work in Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, took a different approach to understanding the character.
Rigney relied on the source material instead. He read Ellis’ novel carefully and studied the author’s public persona to build his performance. The decision to keep distance from Ellis was not intentional at first. It simply worked out that way due to the production schedule and Ellis’ hands-off approach to the adaptation.
The actor told reporters that not meeting Ellis actually gave him more freedom. He did not feel pressure to mimic the real person. Instead, he could focus on the version of Bret that exists in the book and the script. This allowed him to create a performance that felt true to the story rather than trying to copy the real author’s mannerisms.
Ryan Murphy’s Vision for the Adaptation
Ryan Murphy, the creator behind American Horror Story and Glee, pursued the rights to The Shards after an earlier HBO adaptation fell through. Murphy, who is the same age as Ellis, connected deeply with the novel’s 1981 setting. He was 16 years old that year, the same age as the characters in the show.
Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter that he “begged and pleaded” for the rights. His pitch to Ellis was simple: he would get the show made and create something the author would like. The strategy worked, and Ellis agreed to let Murphy adapt the book.
The casting process was extensive. Murphy and his team saw 500 actors for the main roles. They eventually settled on a cast that blends rising stars with familiar faces. Rigney landed the lead role of Bret Easton Ellis after impressing Murphy during auditions.
The Cast of ‘The Shards’
The ensemble cast features several young actors from famous families. Homer Gere, son of Richard Gere and Carey Lowell, plays the mysterious transfer student Robert Mallory. Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, portrays Susan Reynolds. The supporting cast includes Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer, Graham Campbell as Thom Wright, Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer, Evan Rachel Wood as Liz Schaffer, and Broadway producer Jordan Roth as Steven Reinhardt.
Rigney spoke about working with Murphy’s directing style. “Ryan was really fun in the way that he directed us where he would have us do multiple takes multiple ways. So we were never clued in on which take he was going to use,” he told Us Magazine.
Ellis’ Hands-Off Approach to the Series
Despite being an executive producer and co-creator, Bret Easton Ellis took a largely hands-off approach to the television adaptation. After the failed HBO version, Ellis had been hesitant to pursue another television project.
Executive producer Brad Simpson explained Ellis’ role at the series premiere. “He took a very godfather-y, hands-off approach. He gave us some guiding light from the beginning and sort of said, ‘Go with God. Go make your show,’” Simpson told The Hollywood Reporter.
Ellis wrote drafts of the first two episodes alongside Murphy but was notably absent from the premiere events. Gerber confirmed that she never saw Ellis on set. Still, the author’s influence remained strong through his novel. Gerber, a self-described fan of Ellis’ work, said she read the book “over and over again”.
What ‘The Shards’ Is About
The Shards follows Bret (Rigney), an aspiring writer in his senior year at an elite Los Angeles prep school. His life begins to unravel when a new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), transfers to the school. Robert’s arrival coincides with the rise of “The Trawler,” a serial killer targeting teenagers across the San Fernando Valley.
As Bret’s paranoia grows, his relationships with his girlfriend Debbie (Hayes Warner), his friends Susan (Kaia Gerber) and Thom (Graham Campbell), and his own sense of reality begin to fracture. The show also explores the influence of adults in their orbit, including characters played by Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth.
The series captures the wealth, drug use, and excess of early 1980s private school culture in Los Angeles. It is both a psychological thriller and a nostalgia piece, rooted in a specific time and place that Murphy and Ellis both experienced firsthand.
Release Schedule and Viewing Information
The Shards premiered on August 5, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FX and Hulu. The first two episodes aired back-to-back. New episodes will be released every Wednesday. The season consists of nine episodes total, with the finale scheduled for September 9, 2026.
International audiences can watch the series on Disney+. In the UK, the show arrived on August 6, 2026.
Critical Reception and Viewer Response
Early reviews for The Shards have been mixed. The series holds a 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 57 on Metacritic. Some critics have praised Rigney’s lead performance, with Variety noting that he is “terrific as the young Ellis, making the part’s many contradictions and internal struggles perfectly legible to the outside observer”.
Other reviewers have been less kind. Some called the adaptation a “big step down from the might of the book”. Others described it as a “watchable, frustrating ode to the ’80s”. Despite the mixed critical response, viewer reactions on social media have been strong, with many calling themselves “absolutely hooked” after the premiere.

Murphy and Ellis have already mapped out a longer arc for the series. According to Murphy, they have been “plotting a three-season series from the start”.
