Stan Lee created dozens of characters that became household names. Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, and the X-Men all came from his imagination. But one of his later creations never found that same fame. Ravage 2099, a hero Lee created in 1992, headlined his own Marvel comic for 33 issues but faded from memory. More than three decades later, Marvel has given the name “Ravage” to a completely different character, a new Spider-Man villain. This is the story of the original Ravage, why he did not stick around, and what his legacy looks like now.
Who Is Ravage 2099
Paul-Phillip Ravage first appeared in Ravage 2099 #1 in December 1992. Marvel launched its 2099 imprint that year, a line of comics set in a dystopian future. Most 2099 heroes were future versions of existing characters, like Spider-Man 2099 and Doctor Doom 2099. Ravage was different. He was an original creation, not based on anyone from Marvel’s past. Stan Lee plotted the first eight issues, working with artist Paul Ryan. Lee wrote the series during a return to ongoing comics, and it was one of the few major titles he created after She-Hulk in 1980.
Ravage’s origin story was simple and timely. He was the head of Eco Central, a division of the giant corporation Alchemax. Eco Central claimed to fight pollution. When Ravage investigated the claims of a young man named Dack, he learned that Alchemax was actually polluting the environment and covering it up. His own employer framed him for crimes he did not commit. Ravage went on the run, armed with a bulletproof coat and junk from Alchemax scrap yards. He became an outlaw eco-warrior, fighting the corporation that had betrayed him.
“Paul-Phillip Ravage was the head of Eco Central, a division of Alchemax, in the year 2099, until he grew curious and investigated the claims of a young man named Dack, forcing his corrupt employer to take action against him, turning him into the outlaw, Ravage.” — Marvel.com character biography
Why Ravage 2099 Did Not Catch On
Ravage had a strong creative team and a clear mission. He fought corporate greed and environmental damage. Those themes were relevant in 1992, and they still resonate today. But the character never found a large audience. CBR reported that Ravage 2099 was “the most easily forgotten part of the 2099 lineup.” The series tried several drastic changes to boost interest. The most notable change came when Ravage was exposed to radiation on a polluted island called Hellrock. The radiation turned him into a horned beast-man with claws, enhanced strength, and a healing factor. The transformation was meant to match the gritty, muscular trends of 1990s comics. It did not work.
“Ravage underwent a desperate mid-series mutation into a horned beast-man to match the gritty trends of the 1990s, but the drastic reinvention failed to secure a permanent fanbase.” — ScreenRant, October 2026
Ravage also struggled because he had no connection to Marvel’s larger universe. Spider-Man 2099 had the Spider-Man name and legacy. Doctor Doom 2099 had one of Marvel’s most famous villains. Ravage had no built-in fan base. He was a brand-new character in a shared universe full of familiar names. Readers did not know what to expect from him, and the constant changes to his powers and appearance made it hard to get attached.
The Beast Transformation and the End of the Series
The second half of Ravage 2099 pushed the character further from his original concept. What started as a story about a corporate whistleblower became a wild beast saga. Ravage lost more of his humanity as the series went on. He could only act human around his former assistant Tiana and his friend Dack. The comic crossed over into events like “The Fall of the Hammer” and “One Nation Under Doom.” The series ended with Ravage 2099 #33 in 1995. In the final issue, Doctor Doom 2099 encased Ravage in liquid adamantium and fired him into space. It was a permanent exile. Marvel never brought him back in any major way. A small appearance in Savage Avengers 2099 was the only later mention.

A New Ravage Takes Over in Amazing Spider-Man
The Ravage name returned in 2026, but not for Paul-Phillip Ravage. Amazing Spider-Man #1000 introduced a new villain named Ravage. This character is Cormac “Mac” Crane, the long-lost biological son of Aunt May and Uncle Ben. The milestone issue, written by Joe Kelly with art by Pepe Larraz, released in September 2026. The new Ravage has dangerous memory-manipulation powers. He used them to erase Peter Parker from Aunt May’s mind and turn her memories into weapons against Spider-Man. Marvel described him as “layered and complex and mysterious.”
“Ravage is layered and complex and mysterious, and I can’t wait to unleash him on the readers with this monumental issue!” — Joe Kelly, Marvel.com interview
The new Ravage is a personal threat to Spider-Man. He is connected to Peter’s family. He is set to become a recurring villain in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. The original Ravage 2099 had none of those advantages. He was a solo hero in a future timeline with no ties to Marvel’s main continuity. Giving the name to a Spider-Man villain shows how little the publisher values the original character. The 1990s eco-warrior is too far removed from modern readers to cause any brand confusion.
Where Ravage 2099 Stands Today
Paul-Phillip Ravage still exists in the Marvel multiverse. After several continuity resets and overhauls to the 2099 timeline, his story remains a standalone piece of Marvel history. He was the only original hero in the 2099 line. He was one of the last major characters Stan Lee created for Marvel. And he was a hero who fought pollution and corporate greed long before those themes became common in superhero stories. The character may not have found fame, but he represents a unique moment in Marvel’s history. A legendary creator tried something new, and even though it did not last, it remains part of the publisher’s long and varied past.
