The global girl group KATSEYE is facing another member absence as leader Sophia Laforteza announced she is temporarily stepping back from promotional activities. The 23-year-old singer made the decision to focus on her mental health and wellness, following medical advice for extended rest and ongoing care.
Laforteza’s hiatus comes less than six months after fellow member Manon Bannerman took a similar break in February, leaving the six-member group to continue with four members for the time being.
Official Announcement from HYBE x Geffen
The announcement came on Friday, August 7, through a joint statement posted on Weverse, HYBE’s fan-to-artist platform. The statement from HYBE and Geffen Records explained that Laforteza had been receiving support and consulting with medical professionals.
“Sophia has been receiving the utmost support, and following thorough consultations with medical professionals, it has been advised that she take dedicated time for extended rest and ongoing care to ensure a full recovery.”
The companies emphasized that while Laforteza remains eager to perform alongside her bandmates Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel, and Yoonchae Jeung, her health remains the top priority.
KATSEYE’s management confirmed they will reassess her condition in September and provide further updates to fans at that time.
Sophia Laforteza’s Personal Message to Fans
Laforteza shared her own emotional statement on her Instagram Story, expressing how difficult the decision was.
“It truly breaks my heart to have to miss out on a lot. You know how much I love being on stage, performing, and sharing these moments with you. Making this decision wasn’t easy, but I’m learning that health has to come first. I’m realizing that if I don’t take care of my mind and body now, I won’t be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long.”
She thanked fans for their patience and understanding, promising to work hard on her recovery.
“It means more to me than I could ever say. I promise I’m going to work as hard as I can to get through this, heal properly, and come back stronger.”
Laforteza also asked fans to continue supporting KATSEYE during her absence.
Timing and Impact on Group Activities
The hiatus announcement comes at a busy time for KATSEYE. The group is scheduled to headline the Head in the Clouds music festival in Pasadena on August 8 without Laforteza.
Laforteza was also absent from the Los Angeles premiere of the group’s documentary “KATSEYE: Wild Hearts” on August 5. When asked about her absence on the red carpet, member Lara Raj told Variety, “She’s not feeling well, but she says hi.”
The group’s third EP, “Wild,” is scheduled for release on August 14. KATSEYE also has a performance scheduled on the TODAY Plaza on August 14 as part of the Citi Concert series.
Second Hiatus in 2026
Laforteza becomes the second KATSEYE member to take a temporary hiatus this year. Manon Bannerman announced her own break in February, also citing health and well-being concerns.
Bannerman has not yet returned to the group. She previously reassured fans on Weverse that she was healthy and in communication with management. Laforteza had spoken about Bannerman’s absence in a June interview with Allure, saying the group wanted to give her all the time she needed.
