The latest episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity delivered non-stop action as three Soul Reaper captains unleashed their Bankai against the powerful Quincy Gerard Valkyrie. Episode 4, titled “The Perfect Crimson,” aired on August 15, 2026, and gave fans the long-awaited Bankai reveals for Kenpachi Zaraki and Toshiro Hitsugaya, alongside Byakuya Kuchiki using his strongest attack. The episode kept viewers on the edge of their seats with back-to-back transformations and intense fight sequences.
Kenpachi Zaraki Finally Unlocks His Bankai
One of the biggest moments in the episode came when Kenpachi Zaraki finally awakened his Bankai. Throughout the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Kenpachi had not used a single named Zanpakuto attack until now. The transformation happened when Yachiru appeared mid-fight and revealed that she had never been separate from Kenpachi’s sword.
It turns out that Yachiru is part of Kenpachi’s sword spirit that gained its own identity as a Shinigami when Kenpachi gave it a name years ago. This reunion triggered Kenpachi’s new form – a red berserker who fights with teeth and his broken sword. His skin turned crimson, and horns grew on his forehead, making him look like a Japanese demon.
Kenpachi’s Bankai allowed him to rip off Gerard’s arm and cut him in two with pieces of Nozarashi. He pushed Gerard back like it was nothing. However, Gerard’s power, “The Miracle,” allowed him to reform and change forms every time he was defeated. The massive release of spiritual pressure eventually caused Kenpachi’s body to give way, and his hand ripped off before he fell in exhaustion.
Toshiro Hitsugaya Reaches His Complete Ice Form
While Kenpachi fought Gerard, Toshiro Hitsugaya watched from the side as his ice flowers slowly crumbled one by one. When the last petal disappeared, Hitsugaya transformed from a teenager into an adult version of himself. This marked his complete Bankai form, which allowed him to use his ice powers to their full potential.

The adult Hitsugaya received a new voice actor, Yuki Kaji, replacing his regular cast member. His new form let him freeze anything in his path, which helped him disarm Gerard from using his main ability. Byakuya Kuchiki Joins the Fight With His Bankai
Byakuya Kuchiki also stepped up during the battle, using Senbonzakura Kageyoshi against Gerard. Even with all three captains fighting together, they could not overcome Gerard’s “Miracle” power. Gerard’s ability allows him to recover from devastating injuries that would defeat ordinary opponents.
The episode showed that even with Kenpachi, Hitsugaya, and Byakuya working together, Gerard remained a terrifying force of nature. The power of his Schrift kept bringing him back, making him one of the strongest Quincies ever. The battle highlighted the immense threat Gerard poses and raised the stakes for the remaining episodes.
Ichigo Faces Yhwach While Ukitake Holds the Worlds Together
While the captains fought Gerard, Ichigo Kurosaki continued his battle against Yhwach in the throne room. Ichigo transformed into a Hollow-like form, which worried Orihime Inoue because it reminded her of what happened in Hueco Mundo. Ichigo reassured her that he was still in control.
The episode ended with Ichigo unleashing a powerful combined attack – a fusion of Getsuga Tensho and Gran Rey Cero – toward Yhwach. The attack was so massive that it forced Yhwach to draw his sword. The scene featured Ichigo’s theme music “Number One,” marking it as one of the biggest moments in the series.
Meanwhile, Ukitake continued his sacrifice to protect the three worlds from collapsing. However, his efforts could not hold back the Hollows for long. Hollows started descending upon the real world, and Soul Reapers like Ryunosuke took it upon themselves to protect Karakura Town. The weakening borders showed that the battle had wider implications beyond just the fight itself.
Episode 4 Delivers Stunning Animation and Soundtrack
The episode received praise for its outstanding animation quality and use of colors. Every frame showed incredible detail, and the soundtrack added to the overall experience. The combination of Kenpachi’s Bankai reveal and Hitsugaya’s transformation happening at the same time overwhelmed viewers with back-to-back great scenes.
