Tollywood actor Ravi Teja is facing heavy criticism online after a video from the pre-release event of his upcoming film Irumudi went viral. In the clip, the actor uses a Telugu phrase that many have called offensive while speaking to child artist Baby Nakshathra, who plays his daughter in the movie. The incident has sparked a strong debate on social media about the appropriateness of the language used toward a minor in a public setting.
What Happened at the Irumudi Pre-Release Event
The controversy started during a promotional event for Irumudi held on August 16. Baby Nakshathra CM, the young actress who plays Ravi Teja’s daughter in the film, asked the actor to give her a nickname. In response, Ravi Teja said the phrase “Muduru munda” twice.
When Nakshathra said she did not understand what the word meant, the actor laughed and told her he would explain it later. People sitting on stage and in the audience also laughed at the exchange. A video of this interaction quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing strong reactions from viewers.
What Does ‘Muduru Munda’ Mean?
The phrase “Muduru munda” has become the center of the debate. The word “munda” is generally considered a derogatory term for a woman in many Telugu-speaking regions. However, its exact meaning can change depending on the local dialect and context.
“Muduru” can mean mature, aged, intense, or deep, depending on how it is used. Together, the phrase literally translates to someone who is considered “overtly mature”. While some argue it has been used as a term of endearment for children who act mature for their age, others point out that it carries a negative and insulting meaning when directed at women.
Some Telugu speakers have noted that the word “munda” has appeared in literary works and poetry, suggesting its meaning can vary. But many social media users have rejected this defense, arguing that using such a term for a young girl in a public setting is unacceptable regardless of context.
Social Media Erupts With Criticism
The video triggered a flood of reactions on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms. Many users slammed Ravi Teja for his choice of words, especially because they were directed at a child.
One user wrote, “She’s a kid what kind of a language is that”. Another called the remark “completely unwanted”. A third user questioned, “Would Ravi Teja be okay if someone casually called his daughter ‘munda’ in public just like he did?”
Several users expressed shock at the laughter from the audience and those on stage. One person commented, “LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE LAUGHING TO THIS???? LIKE WHAT?????”. Another user wrote, “Rei em matladthunnav ra (what are you even saying), that too to a child and also this is a devotional movie!! This is wrong on so many levels”.
Some users went further, calling the actor a “disgusting human being” and saying they would never watch his movies again. One person even suggested that Ravi Teja should be “banned permanently”.
Some Fans Defend the Actor
Despite the heavy criticism, a section of fans and viewers came to Ravi Teja’s defense. They argued that the phrase was not meant as an insult and that the context matters.
One user explained, “People from Telangana will understand…They say it when affectionately doting on small children… It might sound odd, but it’s an expression of affection”. Another fan wrote, “I think one has to be able to differentiate and understand what’s said with malice and what’s said with a jovial intention. not everything and everyone has to be cancelled”.
Some supporters pointed out that the word “munda” is not considered vulgar in every context and has been used by Telugu poets and writers in the past. They urged people not to jump to conclusions without understanding the cultural and regional nuances of the language.
The Film ‘Irumudi’ and Its Release
Irumudi is an upcoming Telugu emotional action drama directed by Shiva Nirvana, who is known for films like Majili. The movie marks Ravi Teja’s first collaboration with the director and is his 77th film.
The film’s story revolves around a father-daughter relationship. Ravi Teja plays an alcoholic father with a violent past who decides to change his life after his young daughter asks him to give up drinking. He takes up the Ayyappa Deeksha, a 41-day spiritual vow, to turn his life around.
Baby Nakshathra plays the role of his daughter in the film. The cast also includes Priya Bhavani Shankar, Sai Kumar, Ajay Ghosh, Ramesh Indira, and Swasika. The music and background score are composed by GV Prakash Kumar.
Irumudi is scheduled to release in theaters on August 21, 2026, in Telugu and Tamil. The film’s trailer has already been released, and the movie was generating positive buzz before this controversy erupted.

No Official Response From Ravi Teja Yet
As of now, Ravi Teja has not issued any statement or apology regarding the viral video and the backlash. The actor has remained silent on social media, and there has been no clarification from his team about the incident.
The controversy comes at a critical time, just days before the film’s theatrical release. Ravi Teja was hoping for a strong comeback with Irumudi after a series of box-office failures, including his last film Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi, which released in January and was poorly received.
The debate over the phrase “Muduru munda” continues to rage online, with opinions sharply divided. While some see it as a harmless cultural expression, others view it as a clear example of inappropriate language being used casually toward a child in a public forum.
