Kat Dennings recently shared a story about her Mad Max: Fury Road audition with Tom Hardy that turned into one of the most memorable days of her career. The 2 Broke Girls star posted a video on Threads detailing the unusual six-hour chemistry read and what happened afterward.

The 40-year-old actress said she was inspired to tell her story after seeing Michael Fassbender talk about his own failed Mad Max audition on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

The Audition Process Got Really Strange

Dennings explained that she was called in for a chemistry read with Hardy for director George Miller’s 2015 film. The process lasted six hours and felt less like a standard audition and more like an acting class from hell.

“The dialogue was a couple of pages and kind of vague,” she shared. The acting coach in the room made both actors switch roles and run around corners while cameras followed them.

The strangest part came when the coach told them to deliver their lines without actually speaking the words.

“The worst part of it, I do believe, was when the acting coach told us to say the lines without saying the lines, encouraging us to just make noises instead of the lines,” Dennings recalled.

She admitted she was “dying” during the exercise. But Hardy handled it differently.

“Tom Hardy, he really took to this exercise,” Dennings said. “He was able to be extremely free and come up with really creative ways of doing these lines”.

Tom Hardy Drove Her Home

The audition eventually wrapped with a lunch break. But Dennings still had a problem. She didn’t own a car at the time and was living with her parents in a converted garage.

Hardy found out and offered to drive her home.

“He drove me home. He was so lovely,” Dennings said.

When they arrived at her parents’ house, Hardy came inside and met her mother. Dennings said she was ready for the day to end.

“I was like, ‘Alright, Tom, this was a very special day. I hope you move further in this experience, because I know that I’m not going to,’” she recalled.

She went back to the converted garage, changed into pajamas, and took a nap.

He Stayed for Tea with Her Mom

When Dennings woke up hours later and went back into the main house, she found Hardy still there.

“Tom Hardy is still there, having tea with my mother, and just chatting it up,” Dennings said.

The unexpected visit left a strong impression on both Dennings and her mother.

“I will be a fan of his for life,” she said. “I think he’s a wonderful person. And my mom still talks about him”.

Hardy went on to land the lead role of Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road, which won six Academy Awards. Dennings did not get the part.

Other Stars Had Tough Mad Max Auditions Too

Dennings is not the only actor who had a rough experience auditioning for Mad Max: Fury Road. Michael Fassbender previously opened up about his own failed audition, calling it “one of the worst auditions”.

Gal Gadot and Tom Hiddleston also reportedly auditioned for the film and went through a four-hour process.

Hardy’s time on the Mad Max set was not without conflict either. He and co-star Charlize Theron had a well-known feud during filming. Theron admitted she felt threatened by Hardy and grew frustrated when he repeatedly arrived late to set.

Despite that, Dennings had nothing but good things to say about her experience with Hardy.
