Ajith Kumar publicly thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for the government’s new sports infrastructure plans, calling the motorsports initiative a major step forward for the country.
Actor and professional racer Ajith Kumar has come forward to appreciate Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for the government’s focus on developing sports infrastructure across the state. The Chief Minister recently announced plans to build a dedicated Motorsports City in Chennai along with an Olympic City, and Ajith made it clear that this move means a lot to him personally and to the future of motorsports in India.
The actor, who is currently active in international racing, issued a statement to India Today expressing his thanks. He said,
“My heartfelt thank you to the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C Joseph Vijay Avl, for giving every discipline of sports, including motorsport, the much-needed attention by announcing Tamil Nadu government’s initiatives to develop infrastructure. Me being currently involved in motorsports, I would like to rephrase a quote by astronaut Mr Neil Armstrong ‘One small step by the Tamil Nadu government, one giant leap for motorsports in India!’ Wishing The Honourable Chief Minister Thiru C Joseph Vijay Avl the very best in all his endeavours.”
What CM Vijay Announced
On September 3, 2026, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made a suo motu statement in the State Assembly announcing a major makeover plan for Chennai. The government will establish a world-class Olympic City with modern infrastructure, sports arenas, training centres, and accommodation for athletes. Alongside this, a dedicated Motorsports City will be built in Chennai to host Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, and Formula 4 races.
The Motorsports City will feature an international-standard racing circuit with training facilities designed to identify young talent and develop them into national and international-level competitors. Vijay also linked the project to sports tourism, specialised vehicle manufacturing, and employment opportunities.
Tamil Nadu already has a strong racing culture built over decades. The state is home to the Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai, India’s first permanent motor-racing track, and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. The new Motorsports City aims to build on this foundation and take it to the next level.
Ajith’s Racing Journey
Beyond his successful film career, Ajith Kumar has established himself as a serious competitor on the international racing circuit. He started his racing journey in the 2003 Formula Asia BMW Championships and has since competed in the British Formula 3 and FIA Formula 2 Championship.
In 2026, Ajith is competing in the Michelin Le Mans Cup in the LMP3 Pro/Am category for Ajith RedAnt by Virage, alongside former F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan. He has also taken part in the 24H Dubai and the Asian Le Mans Series. His team secured a podium finish at the 24H Dubai event earlier this year.
Ajith’s racing journey will be featured in an upcoming documentary titled ‘Gladiators’ , directed by AL Vijay. The documentary focuses on his life as a professional racer, covering the preparation, challenges, and emotions that come with competing at the international level. The makers have confirmed a theatrical release, though the exact date has not been announced yet.

Industry and Fan Response
The announcement has received positive reactions from the motorsports community. Vicky Chandhok, former president of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), called it “the biggest boost that can happen to motorsport in this country with the backing of the government”. Akbar Ebrahim, president of the FIA Karting Commission, also welcomed the initiative, saying it is “a brilliant initiative for Tamil Nadu, especially because the State has long been at the forefront and has been the hub of Indian motorsport”.
Fans have also shown support for Ajith’s continued focus on racing. While some fans have expressed disappointment about the lack of new film announcements, many have cheered his dedication to motorsports. Ajith has made it clear that racing is his priority at this stage, and with the government now backing the sport with serious infrastructure, the timing could not be better.
The Tamil Nadu government has been increasing its focus on sports. In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports created a task force to monitor motorsports with a vision to bring back Formula 1 racing in India by the end of 2028. The state budget also allocated Rs 1,051 crore to the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, nearly double the previous year’s allocation.
With a dedicated Motorsports City on the horizon and a passionate racer like Ajith Kumar leading the way, Indian motorsports appears to be entering a new chapter.
