Reading the book, Subaru relived his most painful deaths from across the series: being killed by Elsa in the first episode, jumping off a cliff for Rem and Ram, being frozen by Puck, confronting Petelgeuse, and being devoured by the Great Rabbit. After experiencing all these deaths firsthand, he met his past self in the Corridor of Memories. The past Subaru greeted him calmly and explained that love for the people around him was what drove him forward.
The current Subaru finally understood that he had always been enough. He thanked his past self for saving Otto and Garfiel, for helping Petra, Frederica, and the villagers of Arlam, for freeing Beatrice, and for falling in love with Emilia. The two versions of Subaru merged, and the amnesiac Subaru ceased to exist as a separate identity.
Back in reality, Subaru rushed to Emilia’s side and declared: “My name is Natsuki Subaru! Emilia-tan’s number one knight!”. The episode ended on this powerful note, with Emilia smiling as she realized her knight had truly returned.
