Matt Damon had a massive year in 2026, headlining Christopher Nolan’s big-budget epic The Odyssey and reuniting with Ben Affleck for the Netflix thriller The Rip. The 55-year-old actor is not slowing down. He already has another major sci-fi project lined up with the directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, plus several other films in different stages of development. Here is everything you need to know about his upcoming projects, release dates, and streaming information for audiences worldwide.
The Odyssey: Matt Damon as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s Epic
The Odyssey opened in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca who spends a decade trying to return home after the Trojan War.
The cast includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
The film had a reported budget of $250 million and was shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a first for any feature film. Nolan said over two million feet of footage was shot for the movie.
Damon described the production as a tough experience. “The Odyssey was more like an expedition than a film,” he said. He also called it “definitely the hardest movie I’ve ever done”.
The film became a huge box office success, grossing $1.6 billion worldwide. It is the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career when adjusted for inflation.
The Rip: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Reunite on Netflix
The Rip began streaming on Netflix on January 16, 2026. The crime thriller stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as Miami police officers who discover millions of dollars in a stash house. The film is directed by Joe Carnahan.
Damon plays Lieutenant Dane Dumars, who has just been promoted over his longtime partner Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Affleck). The promotion creates tension between the two friends as they face pressure from dangerous people who want the money back.
“It begs the question: what do you do when faced with this massive temptation?” Affleck said about the film’s central conflict.
The cast also includes Teyana Taylor and Steven Yeun. The film is inspired by true events and runs for 113 minutes. It is available to stream globally on Netflix.
Animals: Matt Damon Produced Ben Affleck’s Netflix Thriller
Animals arrived on Netflix and in select theaters on October 9, 2026. Ben Affleck directed and starred in the film, while Matt Damon served as a producer through their company Artists Equity.
Damon was originally set to star in the lead role before The Odyssey came calling. Affleck joked about the situation on TODAY’s Sunday Sitdown. “Matt then ended up getting offered this little, kinda s—– little movie, ‘The Odyssey’ that bombed,” Affleck said, laughing. “It just didn’t work at the box office, or with the critics, which happens sometimes”.
The film follows a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped, forcing him and his wife, played by Kerry Washington, to raise a $7 million ransom.

The Daniels Sci-Fi Movie: Release Date, Cast and What Damon Has Said
Matt Damon’s next major project after The Odyssey is an untitled sci-fi film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Oscar-winning directors known as The Daniels. The film is scheduled for release on November 19, 2027, after being moved from its original date of June 12, 2027.
Damon joined the project after Ryan Gosling exited due to creative differences and scheduling conflicts. Production began in Los Angeles in late 2026 under the working title Thasnagar.
Damon described the film during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. “The way they pitched it to me was: if The Breakfast Club meets Inception meets an anime film meets an episode of The John Oliver Show that didn’t get aired,” he said. “So, if you liked Everything Everywhere All at Once and all the wildness and all the heart, I think you’ll really like this one”.
The cast includes Sandra Oh, Charles Melton, Michael Gandolfini, Sean Kaufman, and British singer PinkPantheress in her feature film acting debut. John Leguizamo is in negotiations to join the film, which would reunite him with Damon after The Odyssey.
Set photos from September 2026 showed Damon wearing a bright red jumpsuit with armor and a helmet, leading many to compare his look to Power Rangers. Reports suggest the story involves time travel between the 1980s and the present day, with themes related to climate change and superhero elements.
“Somehow The Daniels always make the weirdest ideas sound like must-watch movies,” one fan wrote on X, reacting to Damon’s description of the film.
