Gene Roddenberry‘s unmade Star Trek spinoff is finally getting its due. More than 55 years after the original pitch failed to become a TV series, IDW Publishing is bringing Assignment: Earth back to shelves in a brand-new collected edition. The book arrives this week and gives fans a chance to read the full story of Gary Seven and his partner Roberta Lincoln, the time-traveling agents who were meant to headline their own show.
The collection is titled Star Trek: The Edges of the Final Frontier, and it gathers three graphic novels into one 376-page paperback. The release is part of IDW’s ongoing celebration of Star Trek’s 60th anniversary, which falls on September 8, 2026.
What Assignment Earth Was Meant To Be
The story begins with the 1968 episode “Assignment: Earth,” which served as the season 2 finale of Star Trek: The Original Series. The episode introduced Gary Seven, a mysterious human raised by aliens and sent back in time to protect Earth from disaster. He was joined by Roberta Lincoln, a young secretary who accidentally gets pulled into his secret missions.
Gene Roddenberry designed the episode as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff series that would have followed Gary Seven’s adventures on Earth in the late 1960s. The show never made it to air, but the concept stayed alive in fan discussions for decades.
How John Byrne Brought It Back
Comics legend John Byrne stepped in to give the lost spinoff new life. In 2008, IDW published a five-issue miniseries called Star Trek: Assignment Earth, written and drawn by Byrne. The series picked up where the original episode left off, showing Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln as they worked to fix problems in the timeline without being noticed.
Byrne’s run was praised for capturing the feel of the original 1968 episode while adding new depth to the characters. The miniseries ran for five issues and was later collected into a trade paperback. That collection is now part of the new Edges of the Final Frontier edition.
What Is Inside The New Collection
Star Trek: The Edges of the Final Frontier brings together three separate Star Trek comics into one volume. The first is The City on the Edge of Forever, which presents Harlan Ellison’s original teleplay for the classic episode in comic form with painted art by JK Woodward. The second is Assignment: Earth, John Byrne’s take on Roddenberry’s unmade spinoff. The third is Klingons: Blood Will Tell, which tells famous Star Trek encounters from the Klingon point of view, written by Scott Tipton and David Tipton with art by David Messina.
The Assignment: Earth portion follows Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln as they work to stop threats to Earth’s past. The description says they “covertly confront threats to the past so that they can save Star Trek’s future.”

Why The Lost Spinoff Still Matters
The Assignment: Earth concept has held a unique place in Star Trek history because it represents a path the franchise almost took. Gene Roddenberry wanted to build a show around Gary Seven that would have been set on present-day Earth, blending science fiction with spy drama elements. The idea was ahead of its time, and the 1968 episode remains a fan favorite for its different approach to storytelling.
John Byrne, who passed away in 2022, was a legendary comics creator known for his work on X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Superman. His Assignment: Earth miniseries was one of his final major projects for IDW, and it gave the lost spinoff a proper conclusion that the original TV pitch never received.
