Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” is heading to Amazon Prime Video on November 12, 2026, even as the film continues its theatrical run after crossing ₹820 crore worldwide. The streaming announcement was made on November 5 by Prime Video India, confirming that the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada across India and more than 240 countries and territories. The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster brings back Rajinikanth as the retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian and adds a long list of stars from across Indian cinema.
Prime Video Confirms November 12 Streaming Date
Prime Video India shared the release date on Instagram with a short post: “TIGER MUTHUVEL PANDIAN is back. RELOADED. #Jailer2OnPrime, Nov 12”. The film released in theatres on October 15, 2026, and the digital premiere arrives just four weeks later, following the usual window for Tamil films. “Jailer 2” will join the first “Jailer” on Prime Video, allowing viewers to watch both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian’s story in one place.
The streaming release covers India and over 240 countries and territories, with viewers able to choose from Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada audio options. Prime members in India will be able to watch the film at no extra cost, according to reports.
A Digital Version With Extra Footage
Reports suggest the OTT version of “Jailer 2” could include around 30 minutes of additional footage that was not part of the theatrical cut. The extended sequences are said to feature Mohanlal, Vijay Sethupathi, Hrithik Roshan and Santhanam, whose roles were either trimmed or removed from the cinema version. The theatrical cut has a runtime of about 175 minutes, and the reported extended cut has not been officially confirmed by Sun Pictures or Prime Video.
The talk of extra footage follows criticism from fans and at least one prominent producer over the limited screen time for Mohanlal’s character, Mathew. Antony Perumbavoor, a longtime associate of Mohanlal, told reporters in Malayalam: “That isn’t (something) happy for us Malayalis. We share that unhappiness too”. Actress Mirnaa Menon, who appears in both “Jailer” films, defended the makers: “I’m sure Nelson had strong reasons, and more importantly, I don’t think a star like Lalettan would even be bothered by all this”.
The Box Office Run That Rewrote Tamil Cinema Records
“Jailer 2” has collected more than ₹820 crore worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. The film surpassed Rajinikanth’s own “2.0”, which previously held the record with ₹691 crore worldwide. By its 22nd day in theatres, the film had earned ₹466.22 crore net in India and ₹545.30 crore gross in India, according to trade tracker Sacnilk.
The sequel opened on October 15 with ₹59.70 crore net in India on Day 1 and crossed ₹400 crore worldwide in its first four days. It became the first Tamil film to cross the ₹700-crore mark globally within 11 days and the first to cross ₹800 crore worldwide on its 18th day. The film also became the first Tamil title to collect ₹750 million each in the four major South Indian markets of Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Veteran distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam told the Indian Express he believes the film will reach ₹1,000 crore worldwide: “Look at all of Rajinikanth’s superhit films: Annamalai, Padayappa, Sivaji, Chandramukhi. All of them have comedy. Nelson understood this and made a comedy-action film”.
What Happened in Jailer 1? The Story Before the Sequel
Understanding “Jailer 2” starts with the first film. Muthuvel Pandian appears to be an ordinary retired family man, but he has a fearsome past as “Tiger,” a legendary jailer who commanded respect from hardened criminals. His quiet life ends when his son Arjun, an assistant commissioner of police, goes missing while investigating Varman, a gangster who steals ancient temple idols and smuggles them overseas.
Muthuvel returns to his violent past to take down Varman’s empire. He calls on powerful former inmates and allies, including Narasimha (Shiva Rajkumar) and Mathew (Mohanlal), whose support proves critical. The first film delivers a major twist: Arjun was not a victim. He was a corrupt officer working with Varman. When Arjun refuses to surrender and threatens his own family, Muthuvel makes the devastating decision to end his son’s life. Before dying, Varman warns that a larger network operates behind the scenes, setting up the sequel.
Jailer 2 Story Explained: From Dileep’s Revenge to the Kalpak Family
“Jailer 2” is set three months after the events of the first film. Muthuvel lives a secluded life with his family near Anaikatti, Coimbatore, working as a supermarket supervisor. His family remains unaware that he killed Arjun. Dileep (Suraj Venjaramoodu), a close friend of Varman, begins searching for the person responsible for Varman’s death.
Muthuvel infiltrates the idol-smuggling world by becoming a driver for a local gangster named Moorthi (Namo Narayana) and secretly arranging contact with Dileep’s operations. The investigation leads to the Kalpak family, the powerful syndicate behind the idol trade. The family is led by patriarch Chakri Kalpak (Mithun Chakraborty) and his children Bodhi (SJ Suryah), Kaantha (Vidya Balan), Ved (Jatin Sarna) and Sharva.
Bodhi orders an attack on Narasimha and kidnaps his wife and son, forcing Muthuvel into a high-stakes deal to return three containers of stolen idols. The conflict becomes personal when the Kalpak family reveals to Muthuvel’s wife, daughter-in-law and grandson that he was responsible for Arjun’s death. His wife Vijaya calls the police, and Muthuvel is arrested.

The Climax and That Cliffhanger
The final showdown takes place at the Kalpak family’s estate in Goa. Muthuvel, with help from Roddy (Hrithik Roshan), infiltrates the property to rescue his family. Chakri Kalpak activates a bomb trigger attached to his wheelchair and dies in the explosion, while Muthuvel escapes. Bodhi tries to flee on a private jet but is intercepted by Muthuvel and Mathew, who destroys the aircraft.
Muthuvel surrenders to the police for killing Arjun and confesses in front of his family. The film then delivers its final twist. A police officer hands Muthuvel a phone with a message from Kaantha, who has survived the battle and is confined to a wheelchair. The officer is revealed to be Vijay Sethupathi, and he encourages Muthuvel to reply, warning that Kaantha could be upset if he ignores her. The ending leaves the door open for a third film, though no official announcement has been made.
What Viewers Are Saying
Early reactions to “Jailer 2” were mixed. Many viewers praised Rajinikanth’s screen presence, the action sequences, the interval block and Anirudh Ravichander’s background score. One user wrote: “Rajini screen presence is on another level! The interval block is, and the mass elevation scenes are pure goosebumps! A solid commercial first half. The second half feels a little slow in parts, but the banger climax makes it worth the wait”.
Another viewer credited the director: “Special credit to Nelson for the craft, writing, and execution of Jailer 2. The man has absolutely nailed it!”. Some fans criticised the runtime, the pacing of the second half and a weaker villain compared with Varman from the first film. The cameos, especially Mohanlal’s trimmed role, became a major talking point.
Nelson Dilipkumar on Expanding the Jailer World
Director Nelson Dilipkumar spoke about the sequel’s journey from theatres to streaming: “The response to Jailer was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey. With Jailer 2, we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level. Having Rajinikanth sir reprise his iconic role as Muthuvel Pandian, alongside such a formidable ensemble cast, with Anirudh’s music adding its own distinctive energy, made this chapter particularly exciting for us”.
He added: “Following the film’s spectacular theatrical response, we’re delighted to bring Jailer 2 to Prime Video, where it will join Jailer, taking both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian’s story to audiences in India and across the world”.
