Renu Desai has spoken directly about the public scrutiny she has faced since her 2012 divorce from Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. In a recent podcast conversation, the actress, filmmaker and animal welfare activist compared her long-running experience with public judgment to the 14-year exile of Lord Ram, asking a simple question that has stayed with many viewers: “When will my exile end?”
Her remarks came during an appearance on the Visual Talks podcast, where she spoke about identity, career and the way Telugu audiences continue to link her name to her former husband even after more than a decade of separation. The conversation has drawn attention because it puts a personal face on a public story that has followed her since the divorce was finalised in 2012.
‘Born Only in June 1999’: Renu Desai on How Telugu Audiences See Her Life
Renu Desai said Telugu audiences often treat her arrival in Hyderabad for the 2000 film Badri as the starting point of her life, as if nothing before or after that moment counts. The film starred Pawan Kalyan and became a major hit, and it is where the two first worked together.
“For Telugu people, here’s something about my life. I was born only in June 1999, when I came for Badri. Before that, I didn’t really have a life. That’s how people do it,” she said on the podcast.
She explained that the same erasure applies to everything she has built since the divorce was finalised in 2012. Renu Desai pointed out that she produced a Marathi film that became a success, wrote, produced and directed another film, took part in a dance show, wrote poetry and returned to acting in Telugu cinema.
“We divorced back in 2012, right? After 2012, I produced a Marathi movie that was a super hit. Then I wrote, produced, and directed another movie. I did a dance show, wrote poetry, now I’m doing films. If I’m nobody, why would anyone call me?” she said.
The Lord Ram Comparison: ‘Even Lord Ram Was in Exile for Only 14 Years’
The most widely shared part of the conversation was her comparison to Lord Ram’s 14-year exile. Renu Desai noted that the divorce was finalised in 2012, and 14 years later she still finds herself defined by a marriage that ended more than a decade ago.
“It’s been 14 years. Even Lord Ram was in exile, but for only 14 years. When will my exile end?” she asked.
The comparison was not made in a religious or political context. It was a personal way of describing how long she has carried a public label that she says does not reflect the life she has built since. The remark has been reported by NDTV, India Today, The Indian Express and several Telugu news outlets.
Who Is Renu Desai? A Career Beyond the ‘Ex-Wife’ Tag
Renu Desai began her career as a model in Mumbai. She competed in Femina Miss India, appeared in more than 30 advertisements and featured in the music video “Breathless.” She made her Telugu film debut with Badri (2000) opposite Pawan Kalyan, followed by Johnny (2003) , which Pawan Kalyan wrote and directed. She also worked as the production designer on Johnny.
After stepping away from acting, she served as Pawan Kalyan’s personal stylist and costume coordinator. The couple married on January 28, 2009, in an Arya Samaj ceremony at Pawan Kalyan’s residence. They filed for divorce in 2011, and it was finalised in 2012.
Since the divorce, Renu Desai has built a separate professional life. She produced the Marathi film Mangalashtak Once More and directed Ishq Wala Love. She served as a judge on Zee Telugu’s Drama Juniors and returned to acting with the 2023 film Tiger Nageswara Rao, playing the social reformer Hemalatha Lavanam. She also filmed the Telugu project Kashi Majili for ETV Win, which began streaming on September 13, 2026.
Away from films, Renu Desai runs an animal rescue NGO that provides free treatment for stray dogs and cats. She has also spoken about her work in real estate and stock investments, stating that she did not take alimony after the divorce.
Online Abuse and Legal Action: ‘Enough Is Enough’
The podcast conversation is part of a longer public discussion about the abuse Renu Desai has faced online. She has previously said that the trolling intensified after a January 2026 press conference on street dog attacks in Hyderabad. In an Instagram video from March 2026, she warned that she would pursue legal action against people posting abusive comments.
“Now if I come across any abuses for me I am not going to leave you! I will make sure that the cyber police finds out where you live and get you arrested! Enough is enough now with the senseless abusing,” she said in the video.
In the same video, she described the kind of language directed at her.
“Do you have no conscience? You’re calling me a rabies l***a and hoping dogs bite my private parts. What kind of language is this? I won’t stay calm anymore. I will use my influence and come to your homes, tell your parents what you’ve done. You are frustrated, lazy and depressed.”
Deccan Chronicle reported in April 2026 that Renu Desai had already taken legal action against several individuals with the help of cybercrime police, leading to arrests in multiple cases. She warned that details of offenders could be shared with their workplaces and family members.
Pawan Kalyan’s Political Role and Family
Pawan Kalyan is currently the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the president of the Jana Sena Party. He married Russian actress Anna Lezhneva in 2013, and they have two children. Pawan Kalyan and Renu Desai share two children: son Akira Nandan and daughter Aadya.
Renu Desai has previously spoken about raising her children under public scrutiny. In a separate conversation, she said that in India, when children from high-profile families make mistakes, it is often the mother who is blamed.
“Unfortunately, in our country, if kids mess up, it’s always the mother who gets blamed for not raising them right,” she said. “Today, Aadya and Akira are good and well-behaved, but no one appreciates that. If something goes wrong, and if they have a bad habit, it’s all on me, that the mother didn’t raise them properly. She’s at fault in how she raised them.”

A Public Life That Keeps Returning to One Question
The Visual Talks podcast conversation has given Renu Desai a fresh platform to describe what she says is a familiar experience: every professional or personal step she takes gets filtered through her connection to Pawan Kalyan. She has built a career as a producer, director, stylist, judge, actor, poet and animal welfare activist, yet the public conversation keeps returning to the divorce.
Her Lord Ram comparison has resonated because it turns a private frustration into a simple, relatable question about how long a person is expected to carry a label from a past relationship. The remark does not offer an answer. It asks for one.
